I got a letter from the fake rocket fans The other day I opened and read it It said they were suckers
Don't believe the hype - its a sequel As an equal, can I get this through to you My 90's Hakeem' with a trunk of funk All the Bulls punks can't stop his dunk
Jordan - was a hero to most but he never meant nothing to me you see straight up lucky the sucka was simple and plain Motha F him and Pip same
A top defensive center can affect the game much more so than a top defensive two guard. This is basic. Olajuwon wasn't just a top defensive center however, he was arguably the best defensive center ever. Furthermore, being that Dream and Jordan were each team's highest scorers, Dream's ability to affect Jordan defensively would be much higher than Jordan's ability to affect Dream. You're also forgetting the basis for Houston's offense was based on Dream being double teamed. Jordan hounding Maxwell wouldn't be as much a factor as it would against teams that ran a different type offense, if anything, Jordan hounding Maxwell would just piss him off and juice him up to go at Jordan on the other end like he often did.
He's also forgetting what happened. We can pretend scenarios in the playoffs, but when they actually PLAYED, this is what happened. Even the Chicago media acknowledges Vernon Maxwell's defense.
You know this is similar to. Yao vs Dwight Howard. So in the future, some newb Rocket fan thinks that Dwight destroyed Yao based on Dwight winning the dunk contest, but you young Rockets now will be old Rocket fans and tell them, "Listen newb, I watched Yao whip Dwight" This is somewhat the same thing. Us old people saw this , so people like Clutch would make statement of such confidence. It's not like we're being homers, we're being HEROES. note this is a CHICAGO paper
tinman shouldn't create these threads, reminiscin about the past and tryin to show who's a "real" fan or not. Same ish for years.
Ultimately, CometsWin, I get the feeling that somehow I'm going to be outed as a "fake Rockets fan" in this discussion for pointing out things like Jordan's defensive impact on the game from a defensive standpoint. Especially if we're talking about what wins mean in the regular season (as in, depending on who's involved, those wins in December and January aren't as important as the ones in May and June). Ah, well. It's a slow morning, so what the hell... The Bulls of that time were very much a perimeter-oriented defense. I imagine what they would have focused on would have been disrupting the Rockets from getting into their half-court sets with a great deal of time left on the shot clock, as they did with practically everyone at some point. They played in the passing lanes in the halfcourt, and made the second and third pass out of those traps and switches that they ran very difficult to execute consistently. Jordan and Pippen tended to spearhead that chaos. Horace Grant was excellent at the full-court or three-quarter court pressing and trapping defense that the Bulls often employed. The Rockets backcourt would have struggled against pressure like that (as Kenny Smith and Vernon Maxwell both did against the Knicks), and New York had nothing like the athletes the Bulls had. Sam Cassell would have been a big help in handling that pressure, though. As I said, the Rockets would be better than the Bulls in the halfcourt because of Hakeem. The Bulls would be better in transition because of Jordan. I did remember it being mentioned here on more than one occasion though, that what you do or don't do in the regular season didn't mean beans come playoff time. The NBA playoffs are an entirely different animal. A win or two against somebody in the regular season should give a team some confidence. Matchups are everything in the postseason. But you're going to see the same team in the NBA playoffs every other night for almost two weeks. Both teams would have taken each other's measure by no later than the third game. The games would be decided then, by things we could not forsee or predict. The games would have to be played out. I didn't think the Rockets, for instance, had anything to be worried about fromt he Seattle Supersonics in 1996, when they faced them. The Rockets were the two-time defending champions, and had bested everybody else in the playoffs tow years running. I didn't think the Sonics had a better team than the Rockets, then. I wanted the Rockets to win and shut up that crazy talk about how, if the Sonics hadn't been such sweethearts and bowed out of the playoffs two straight years (again, the sugesstion that the Rockets needed somebody to get out of the way and let them win...something I never liked)... I knew that once Same Cassell hit that three pointer in New York against the Knicks in game 3 of the '94 title round, that the Rockets were going to win the whole thing. Never doubted it. Would the Rockets have been intimidated by the Bulls? Not at all. Would the Bulls have been intimidated by the Rockets? Of course not. Would Michael Jordan have been great between the foul lines? Certainly. Would Hakeem have dominated on the interior, like he always did against everybody? Sure he would have. Would I have cheered for the Bulls to win instead of the Rockets? No. Jordan's reputation as a competitor and winner wasn't manufactured in a title-less vacuum like the majority of players today. The hype surrounding Jordan actually hadn't caught up with his ability as a player yet, surprisingly. He got the job done when it counted. He beat anybody who challenged him in the title round. That's nothing to sneeze at. And acknowledging that, I don't think, makes me a Rockets hater. But so be it. I'll stand by what I said in the very beginning, CometsWin. The Rockets would be the only team to force the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan to play seven games in the title round (had they met in 1994 and Jordan not taken a minor league baseball sabbatical). And then, it would be anybody's game. A game seven between Olajuwon and Jordan for a title would be a contest for the ages. And whoever the hell you were rooting for wouldn't have made any bit of a difference. I would personally have preferred to SEE it, rather than get into some silly bickering about it on an internet forum... ...but there's that middle-aged shrew in me rearing up again....
Sorry dude, we're talking about real rockets fans and real rockets legends. The best that ever donned a rockets uniform. You could create a thread about your favorite hawks player. No one is stopping you. And you can discuss real hawks history about legends like dominique wilkins, teach the fake hawks fans about real players.
tinman, honest question, have you ever started these kind of threads on other BBSes? If so, how did it go?
what other bbses? Donny, I know you sweat the Houston humidity, how do you feel knowing you were a fan during that era and someone disrespects your team and claims to be a Rockets fan?
I don't know, any of them? Basketball in particular? I'm curious because it seems like with the information and passion you have, especially when it comes to Hakeem and the Rockets superiority vs. other teams of that era, that you could do the world of online basketball discussion some good by taking this fight to the haters, instead of beating the drum amongst our own, who by and large already know and appreciate these things.
Oh yes it does. If you claim to be a Rockets fans and root for Jordan to win, then you aren't a Rockets fan. It's pretty damn simple. If you claim to be Rockets fan and you know that the Rockets have owned the Bulls in the early 90s, yet you still have no hope for them , then you aren't a Rockets fan. You tend to really ride MJ's jock, but you never explained to us why in the Chicago papers, they mention Maxwell ? why they mention that the Rockets owned them for so long? What's the Rockets strategy on Jordan? did it work? how much did he score on us? You also FAIL to mention all those other guys, Cartwright, Grant, Armstrong, Paxon, Hodges, Stacy King. You become completely fixated on Jordan and his legacy, not strategy or real results.
Donny, you ask people why Clutch named himself Clutch back when you started here, i'm sure you'll get 99% correct answers. now, I seriously doubt you get 66%. You see these people here when you give them stats, youtube videos, eye witness accounts, newspaper articles from the OTHER team.. and they still don't believe in Clutch City People respected Clutch back then and the BBS, now we have suckers who lie about their basketball experiences and not pay the TipJar bets Oh. I'm one of those dudes who yelled obscenities at the the Sports Illustrated guy during the Mattress Mack Astrodome event. You have suckers now saying hey i'd draft Jordan instead of Dream knowing what the Bulls did blah blah You know for a fact they have no idea what Dream did for the city, they don't know the journey And they sure as hell don't know why Clutch started this thing in the first place. Hint: Clutch isn't a bulls fan or a Jordan jocker.
Your obsession is getting out of control. So what if someone says they'd rather have Jordan? As time passes, people that were too young to remember the championships or were born after they won back to back don't have any connection to that era. Why is that so hard to understand? I was born in 1988, so I have 0 connection to the 81 and 86 Rockets teams that lost in the finals. I know about them, I have looked them up and watched videos of them, but I have no harsh feeling towards Boston or Kevin McHale, because I didn't live through that era. You're just that guy that gets old and reminisces about everything instead of keeping up with the times. I could argue that you aren't a real Rockets fan, since you refuse to let go of an era that happened almost 20 years ago.
you're the one on my threads like white on rice or corn on the cob. if you don't like crack then why are you on the corner dawg?
