I certainly am no Bima but I can take a stab at it. Speculation first. I have done a lot of digging into what it would require to acquire Gasol. Building on that I would think that it would take Lowry, Martin, PPat, Morris and the 14th and maybe the 16th draft picks to cement a deal (give or take 1 piece) for Howard. However the real problem is that Orlando will try their hardest to dump Turks contract into the trade. I cannot see the Rockets taking on that Turkey. As near as I can understand Bima's posts we could have $19 million in cap space available in we amnesty Scola, let Dragic walk and buy out Dally. So if we amnestied Scola we would have close to $18 million of can space available for Williams. I would have to say that you could do some playing with the package for Howard. There is some wiggle room there. Assuming we do not have the space to resign Dragic - ~ $2.4 million cap hold: Williams/vet minimum signing Lee/the 2012 draft pick/Parsons Parsons/Bud Motiejunas/MLE Howard/Camby (if he is willing to work cheap) I cannot forecast the contract implications of Howard and Williams. I used $38 million. Including cap holds the roster above comes in at approximately $59 million. The discussion of cap space issues remains informed speculation until Bima actually runs the numbers.
Not crazy about seeing this piece from Feigan. Half the time, he seems to be a conduit for the Rockets front office, at least from where I sit.
To me, this PR spurt signals that Morey is not focusing on moving up in the draft, because that would involve giving up trade assets.
Isn't it better than NOT having to watch a season of it?!?!? You don't get handed superstars "just because". Unless we get lucky and score the number 1 pick, there's no all star bigman in the draft. To get Gasol for something like Lowry/Scola + roleplayers would be a steal. Why would the Lakers do it? Frankly it's not working for them and they need 'depth' to support Bryant + one of the bigmen that they have. Gasol is older, therefore they would trade him first. We give them depth, sure it might help them, but it sure as heck helps us too. I'd rather watch a season with a 2 way big who can influence the result of a game than watch our 1 way bigs struggle to contain the opposition time and again...
Im sorry but lin wouldnt be so "lintastic" in houston... would have been in the same.position as dragic comin off the bench and than a chance to start... yet dragic isnt the great slovenian hope to the masses like lin is the great asian hope... but reverse the position gogi in new york would be the greatest story this year while lin would be a footnote... basketball skills? dragic>lin... media redpect tho? Lin>dragic... Albeit gasol/nene is better than scola/kmart...expensive but effective... i would have liked gasol/gasol over gasol/nene... Also why i dont think that was ever dm's plans i could easily have seen him trade for dwight... and yes it would be a better package... lowry/gasol/nene/picks/young role players(morris/ppat/bud) would have been a way better package than anything we offered this past deadline... probably could have got it done instead of magic waiting for an opt in... dwight back with good ole buddy c.lee and a solid dragic, parsons etc... could have opened his mind... even if he sits out with injury... watches us play hard without him and than realizes we have madsive cap to sign deron along with bird-rights to give him an extra 30mill... got some solid pieces already along with some draft picks for more playera... BUTTTTTTT that didnt happen... its all speculation and doesnt matter... its nice to fantasize... i still think if i didnt get intimadated and decide to not to try i could have slept with a pornstar... truth is i did get scared and lacked the confidance... i admire morey for his brashness and confidence... but i dont dwell on that situation of my life... ive moved on and focus on whats possible thats laid in front of me...cant move forward if you stuck in the past...
The Rockets aren't amnestying Scola. They can dump him in a trade if they had to. I think the Rockets may pay someone (Sacramento?) to eat Dalembert's partial guarantee on draft night if they can't use Sammy in a separate bigger trade. Dragic's cap hold is a little over $4 million. If the Rockets use cap space to sign Williams, they won't have the MLE available to use. Other than that, I think you nailed it. (Just messing with you, man. Better luck next time.)
LOL Bima I'm good. Did the best I could without sinking tons of time into it. And I had disclaimers all over the place. I learn a little from you every time you post about cap. At the present rate I may be competent at it by 2015.
I wouldnt mind Gasol - but I want no part of his bloated contract. That said, the lakers are so over the cap (and with nw penalties kickin in) they should be giving stuff up (ie pick(s)) just to move Gasol's contract...
Josh Smith is the best from the "likely to get traded" group. I wouldnt want to go after Gasol or Stat.
Smith is in the boat as Howard. He can walk in the summer of 2013 - UFA. Should he be signed to a contract extension before we would trade for him?
If we upgrade with ONLY Gasol, I'd be disappointed. Camby, oldest in the league does not have an offensive game, yet he is still in the league and he is not Juwan Howard. I believe a happy Gasol and the right players can still do damage because height is not taught. Remember Gasol and Bynum whooped the Spurs at full strength without Kobe. If the Lakers are smart, they keep everyone and tell Kobe to take less shots, let their big men take more shots. Everyone knows Kobe's ego is bigger than Obama and Winfrey combined. If Gasol can come cheaply, I'd do it and if Morey can't get any1 to come, a lone Gasol is an upgrade over Scola, or any of our big men, but I would be not too thrilled about the prospect of another season without bonified star player(s).
no cap hell please Mr. Gasol will be hugely overpaid for the next two years. Do we have any trade exceptions left to do salary dumps? (Martin and Scola)
