I don't WANT to trade him, just think that might be what is available. And Minny is a natural landing spot for KMart whom we do not need. DD
Too much. I think Gasol still has game left in him, but the Lakers don't hold all the cards here. Lowry could probably get us a lottery pick if we wanted. I wouldn't offer up Lowry (worth, say, a #8 pick) + a #14 player + a #14 player + this year's #16 for a guy who has to show he's still worth at least a portion of that contract AND who will be taxing his +30-year-old body through the Olympics before returning to the NBA hardwood and etc etc. I agree that his price should be a lot lower than last November/December.
If the Rockets get Gasol, they should try to get a first round pick that is like 4 or 5 years in the future, the new management there sucks, they are going to decline in a few years. DD
I think there's been some miscommunication. No one is saying Gasol is a superstar who will make us a contender. But since we aren't rebuilding, it makes sense to acquire him for the right price. Scola is aging too. I think he will decline faster than Gasol.
You suggested trading him for a RFA. Who is a carbon copy of Stromile Swift so far.... It's arguable whether we need KMart or not. I can certainly agree that he isn't the best fit for us, but I'm not going to trade him for Anthony Randolph, even if you could under the salary cap.
with the lakers being beat 4-1 and in the fashion they did with everyone pointing fingers at gasol, and management getting pressured by media and fans to move Gasol.. i think it's pretty safe to assume the rockets will be in the mix to get him whether we like it or not. And i personally don't like it.. i don't mind if we acquire him as long as Morey doesn't give up our picks and like 4 guys to get him because he isn't worth that at all.. i'd give them Scola, Kmart…
As others have pointed out, it doesn't make sense to acquire him at all, really. His contract is too bad at this point. For all the Stern b****ing on this board, in retrospect his trade nix crushed the Lakers and probably helped the Rockets. Here was the trade: Lakers get: Chris Paul Rockets get: Pau Gasol Hornets get: Odom, Martin, Dragic, Scola, 1st round pick To the Hornets, probably indifferent between the trade they actually did and the nixed one. Eric Gordon is probably the best asset of all the potential assets they would have acquired, but he was injured all year. Still, they didn't take on a ton of salary, NBA got the team sold, and they got Gordon. But the Rockets were going to give up Dragic and a 1st rounder? And Martin and Scola? C'mon. For just Pau Gasol? Even considering there were other moves to be made, this trade should be looked at independently, and that would have been bad value. Stern saved us The Lakers, meanwhile, traded Odom anyway, so to them it was about CP3 vs. Pau. They got screwed. Pau was charmin soft this year. Bynum probably would be better off without Pau anyway. And the Lakers continue to be crushed by crappy PG play. That CP3 trade could of had Kobe win 1 or 2 more championships. Instead, they are where they are. We should seriously be thanking Stern.
I really have to disagree. If we could get Gasol for Lowry, PPat, Morris and the 16th our lineup would be: Dragic/? draft Marshal with the 14th? or vet pickup Martin/Lee Parsons/Bud Scola/Motiejunas Gasol/Camby We would go from 9th seed to fighting to get into the WCF. Why you might ask? See my earlier post about 9:55 as to why it would be an offensive revelation for Mchale's system. Not enough defense in the starting five for a match up? Insert Lee into the starting lineup. After having read the pointless threads comprised of clueless posts about ranking centers in the NBA I have only one thing to say - Pau is a 20/10/2 blocks center with all of the defensive acumen of Dally/Camby. As for Lowry, PPat, Morris and the 16th for Pau being too dear, what exactly are we giving up besides a top 10 guard (which opens up the resigning of Dragic) and the 16th? A couple of players who may be serviceable starters sometime in the future. But that trade allows the Lakers to dump $10 million in salary and gets them a really good PG which they desperately need.
Grabbing Gasol was smart when we had other dominos to fall as we were going to sign Nene and Hayes. Now, it doesn't make much sense.
It was stupid, look at Nene and Hayes now..... That would have been an epic disaster, we would be on the hook for Nene's bloated contract, as he declines and Hayes got fat, and was overated anyway. Thank GOD Stern vetoed that trade, saved Morey from his biggest mistake EVER. Not to mention we would have lost probably the best PG prospect to ever play for the Rockets in Dragic. Yeah, talent evaluation on the Rockets is not really all that great, IMO. DD
Fine, but can you trade for a RFA? I guess sign and trade. But then, I don't really want Randolph on a new, long-term deal. KMart's contract should hold greater value at the trade deadline, as a large expiring deal. Moreover, the TWolves don't have a first round pick this year. I know that's not exactly what you suggested, but you are a smart enough poster (even if some of your ideas are off target, you at least put them out there) to put a little more research and thought into things than just throwing stuff out there.
Me too, I already thanked Stern for a couple of times. I also want to thank Amar'e Stoudemire for his failed health test, when he was in the Suns, then we could get the injured, overpaid Stoduermire on the roster for next couple years.
I think that's way too much to give up for Gasol. That's probably the package that Morey thought was gonna get us Howard, until Howard opted in.
I did read your post and while he has the size of a center and did post up those numbers, for all intents and purposes he's basically a PF. I liked your analysis of how he could be used here BUT he strikes me as Lamar Odum Part Deux and my gut is telling me that the Rox would end up repeating the Mavs experience with this guy. He just doesn't appear to possess the temperament to be the big dog and at his salary, he'd have to be that here. Plus, I just don't see how he'd want to be here and I don't see the kind of drive and desire in him that you want to see in your star player.
I think the new CBA has eliminated a lot of what was valuable in the past, and most teams are not in need of large cap relief any longer, most prepared for the new CBA. KMart's value as a contract is not all that much, any longer. As for Randolph, I like his skillset, he is not Stromile, at least in game types, definitely a dumbass, but at least he can play. Agree on the NO long term deal, but a couple of years at around 4 mill or so, would be worth the shot, IMO. He is only 23, sometimes it takes these guys a while to mature, some never make it, but with the Rockets in their purgatory hell, he is the kind of player you have to keep rolling the dice on, sort of like TWill. Of course, you then need to PLAY them...lol. DD
We really should be thanking Stern for helping us dodge a bullet but unfortunately you have once again chosen to interject reality into the discussion which will no doubt tic off a number of the red koolaid drinkers who still harbor dreams of pairing Gasol with Nene.
I think we are going to have to agree to disagree. I am good with that and I value your opinion. But for years when Bynum was injured Gasol was the player manning the low post for the Lakers.
I really wish people would stop mentioning Martin in a trade with the Lakers. It makes no sense for LA at all. They could be in the lottery in the next two years unless they make some genius moves. -Kobe clearly needs a star big next to him, but it's also clear that the supporting cast starting with Artest is horrible. They need to somehow flip Gasol for 3 new (upgrade) starters and either salvage Bynum or flip him for a new star big. And on the side, with no cash, find 3 worthwhile rotation guys for the bench. Tall order. They could swing for the fences for Howard (Bynum+Gasol for Howard + Turk + Nelson) on the conditions that Howard and Bynum both extend....but they'll have the same problem with a pathetic collection of role players. Odd that he only had one of those stat lines in 12 games this postseason, and needed to be publicly flamed by Bryant to bring out the effort. Didn't do it a single time in 10 games last postseason. Huh. So weird. Everything about this guy screams that he would sulk and offer minimal effort if he were traded from the Lakers. I've got no interest in a $19M version of Maverick Odom. #44 this postseason in ppg #10 this postseason in rpg There's only 16 playoff teams. There's nothing great about 2012 Pau "Coattail Rider" Gasol. Put on your Bad Idea Jeans if you want the "best" player on your team to be the same guy that wants to get away with coasting behind 2-3 other guys on a contender.
