OK, so I posted in a thread last year about shaving my head. After trying it myself with razors, allowing somebody else to do it and allowing professional barbers to do it with modern and straight blade razors I have come to the conclusion that my head was just not meant to be shaved with razors. Every time, no matter what razor, person or application applied or not applied to my head I would get some bad irritation.

I've been shaving it with clippers ever since the last time I went to a barber to have it done a couple months ago. The problem is the clippers don't get anywhere near close to baldness, as my head looks like it still has about 2 weeks growth on it. I'm using a set of inexpensive ConAir but am ready to upgrade. I've heard excellent reviews about Wahl and Andis brands and I've been reading up on clippers and it seems I need a zero blade clipper/trimmer, something similar to what is being described here: http://www.purtlesupply.com/clipper_and_trimmer_tips/

Do any of you have any recommendations on a clipper/trimmer that get almost razor close? I've been told clippers will never get as close as an actual razor but surely there is something out there relatively close, no?

How much are you exaggerating when you say there's like 2 weeks of hair growth? Either the barber has some ancient clippers or your hair grows really slow. Was he using cheap ones too?

I just bought some andis headliners, to go with my andis masters, after dropping my wahl styler pros and chipping the blade....Hopefully i'll use them later this week and give a review.

The andis masters cut pretty short, but I feel like you're better off with something with smaller teeth on the blade, like a liner. Wahl also has a "balder" clipper, which i believe is zero gapped. You can try that as well.

Also, you can try the Wahl bump free shaver. I've seen barbers use it to finish a bald fade.

The barbers have used straight blades and regular blades. I use my cheap clippers at home that do not cut close at all. My hair actually grows pretty quickly. Maybe a week is more likely but it looks like two. I mean the hair is still long enough to slightly pull after using the clippers

    Thanks for the info.

the oster classic 76 have a blade that can get you pretty close to bald #00000 and the Andis t-outliner can get you a close shave too. Since you are cutting your hair so close you my not even have to upgrade your clippers, just supplement them with an electric shaver.

My dad asks me to shave his head every week and I use my Fade masters to cut down his hair then my T-Otliners to cut off a little more and finish it off with my cheap electric shaver I got for a couple bucks. He also gets that irritation when he shaves his head with a razor but not when I use the electric shaver on his head.

Sucks man... I shave my head every morning. I use some stuff called 'Skin Tight' to get rid of razor bumps... Works GREAT for me. Oddly enough, I didn't have to worry about bumps much once I started shaving everyday.

Just ask your barber about the type of edgers that he uses or whats the best and get that. Use them 2-3 times a week and you'll be good.

MACH 3 razor and shaving creme is all you need. Start by laying a warm/hot towel on your head for 4 or 5 minutes...cream that dome up...shave with the grain first. Re-cream (thin is good).......go against the grain round two. Rinse.......then apply Cocca-Butter. That's my process for the last 3 years.....every other night. I had the bumps and irritation at first........goes away quick with this process. No issues for almost 3 years. Give it a shot bro.......

I use Wahl clippers that I got at a Sally's Beauty Supply for around $40-50 I think. I usually just pull the guard off and shave without one. It gets close, but there is still a little bit of hair left.

The closest shave I've ever gotten without using a razor is at this little place by my old house. They would shave my head with clippers and no guard, then go over my head with a set of the smaller sideburn clippers, and then finally go over my head with a Norelco electric razor. Seemed weird to me at first, but it's about as close as you can get without using a regular razor.

Have you tried using Shave Secret you can find it at Wal-Mart. That's what I use with a bic single blade razor. Try shaving in the shower, the steam from the warm water will make it easier to shave. Then rinse with cold cold water to close the pores. Then when you slap on the after shave lotion it wont burn.

As for an electric shaver I would recommend the Panasonic shaver or the Conair clean head. The Shave Secret can also be used with an electric shaver.

    Happy shaving.

I used to have the same problem. Andis T Outliner works wonders, at least for me.

You can also shave with extra virgin olive oil. It will help condition the skin and eliminate irritation.

FWIW, I finally tried out the these andis headliners i bought to replace the wahls shown. Without a guard, the andis trimmer cut much shorter, or at the very least more evenly. The wahl seemed unable to reach certain areas to cut closer, not sure if it was due to the way the hair grows or skull shape. Maybe some of both.

With guards, however, the andis cut like **** compared to the wahl. Using same length comb, the wahls cut more hair, more evenly, and faster. The andis cut was patchy, like it wasn't picking up all the hair. The andis combs also scraped the skin continuously, wahl's never have.

Neither irritated or nicked the skin.
