I work for a local school district's alternative school as a teacher. We deal with trouble students that range from controlled substances to fighting.

A month or so ago after work I stopped at a Firehouse subs for lunch. While eating, two high school students approached me selling a school card that gives you discounts for area restaurants. I turned them down not thinking anything of it.

So a week ago, when we get new students in; I hear we have a small group of students that was caught for fraudulently selling fake school fundraising cards. My interest was piqued and then when I saw the students in question I immediately recognized two of the students who tried to sell me one about a month ago.

They do not recognize me and so I have a good time building a rapport with them getting to know them while they are here to finish out the school year. I found out one the students will be attending Harvard next year and will be competing in the summer London Olympics in sailing. The other student is a smart kid who may one day make lots of money creating games and computer software. Both true stories.

So I wait until today while talking to both of them and tell them how I know them. As soon as I said Firehouse subs, both of their eyes became huge and they both looked at each other as if to say RUN! But I had a good laugh with them instead and hopefully made an impact.

    thought I would share

Sounds like a couple of idiots trying to ruin their bright future by doing something totally stupid. To me, selling fraudulent discount cards for money is not a trivial thing but it sounds like they got off light. They should appreciate that they are lucky.

By the way, loved the thread title movie by the same name.

I think they do. They have never been in any trouble all throughout school. I don't know what possessed them to do it. They turned themselves in after going to every person they sold them to and paying them back and personally apologizing. That is the only reason they got caught.

Caveat emptor. The onus is on the BUYER, in this case the suckers. That's why they're going to ****ing Harvard and sailing around with hot chicks and y'all are playing tummy sticks on the internet.

OP, sir... was it CLEAR that it was the two students in the fraudulent-card group? Forgive me for asking again, but it seems to me that they could have been persuaded by someone to do that and they themselves may not have known about the fraudulent cards.

How is it that these kind of students (selling fake stuff) and caught for doing so, are accepted to higher-ed places where their backgrounds are heavily scrutinized?

Stopping at alternative school on his way to Harvard? The other one MAY make a lot of money?

That is hilarious. Almost as funny as "BobMarley" teaching at an alternative school for kids with substance abuse issues.

    edit.
I got rep for this, and re-read it, and thought... "that sounded like I was being a dick." Really I was just trying to point out the irony.

A lot of irony, for sure.

I was one year out of HS in 03' when I created this account, so lots of things change. Others, not so much.
