Does anyone think tipping should be phased out of society?

I'm glad there are so many people against tipping out there. That just means that the server will pay more attention to my party. When you tip well for good service, waiters remember you, they make sure you get seated ahead of other people, they make sure you get seated in their section, and they take good care of you.

Yeah, you can't get away with not reporting tips, but many waiters under report their tip totals.

Unless you eat at a local restaurant often, I seriously doubt that. And if you eat somewhere often enough, you'll likely tip well anyway.
And the whole getting seated in front of others and taken good care of if you tip... that's the reason why the system needs to be changed. If the cost of their salary was factored into the price of the food, no one would have to do anything special just to get good service.

Yeah, I understand that. So basically Rox11 is complaining that when we use a credit card, we're preventing the waiters from cheating the government... and in extension the rest of us.

You'd have to eat out a lot, and at the same restaurant, for that to ever factor into things. I don't think I've ever had the same waiter/waitress twice in my entire life. And most of the time, especially at busy places or during busy times, hosts and hostesses do the seating/assignments, etc.

If you have a good friend who waits at a certain restaurant and she takes care of you when you eat there, do you tip her? Overtip? No tip?

Overtip, for sure. I hate the reasoning for tipping. All the same reasons Mr. Pink mentioned and already mentioned in this thread. But it is what it is. I think I'm an above average tipper. Doesn't mean I don't think it's stupid.

I've eaten at a restaurant a good friend of mine waited a few times. I do remember forgetting to tip once... and the other time I left like 10 bucks for a 12 bucks meal. I don't know the protocol for that.

I thought it was just weird because I spend a lot of time with her when she's not waiting.

It's not just the server, silly, it's the whole crew in the back. It takes a lot more folks to make the steak restaurant go.

But in any event, if you're going to put in in those terms, was teh steak 7x better than your bucket of pho? If not...then don't go.... otherwise just accept that it's part of the deal.

i hate tipping. but when i go out to eat i know that's the standard and not going to b**** about it. if it can't afford to tip, i don't go out. what i detest even more is that 18 or 20% becoming the norm. wtf? you're effectively already getting 15% from the increase in price, why the hell should i give you 3% more?

Best way to get around tipping?

Order "To Go" and eat wherever the **** you want.

Tipping keeps servers hustling. Ever been to the DMV or Social Security office? Do you really want that level of service at a restaurant?

Personally, I'd be more than happy with self-serve everywhere I went. Being waited on is a huge hassle. I don't mind getting up to get myself whatever I need. Same goes for valet, bellboys and whatever else.

Most things taste better immediately after it's cooked. I would rather tip a few bucks to avoid reheating food. Things like fries get soggy even after poking holes in the box.

I expect the same level of service provided by waiters in other countries, which does not expect 15% tips.

More accurately, it is for the minimum wage that they make. They reimburse crap for gas. They've really screwed over the drivers with the delivery fee, because they are getting tipped less. Tip your guy, even if it is a buck, because their reimbursement doesn't cover the actual cost of using their car.

Or do like me and pick it up.

That level of service comes from government and union jobs that are hard to fire people from. Not from no tips.

Never been there, I have been to Denmark and England, China and Japan. I do not see that much difference in the service level for the most part between those countries and here.

In Brussel, the servers urinate in your coffee.
