    I am ok with tipping
    but
    This is complete bull*****!

I don't think ANYONE should be paid 2$ a hour
I don't care if they get tips
    2$ an hour is ridiculous!

Allowing restuarants to get around the minimun wage law is crap

The majority of the world uses a different system and I don't think I ever heard "why don't we institute a mandatory tipping system" come up as a discussion topic by citizens of those countries.

    1. I don't see why people are attacking the OP for "being a cheapass." He's not saying he should stop tipping those $2/hr wage earners; he's saying the system should be revamped so the practice is no longer the standard (my guess is by enacting minimum wage and benefits, and an optional service charge distributed to all respective workers). If anything, business owners are cheap.

    2. i'm pretty well traveled; my opinion is that tipping has only a moderate effect on service quality. Service training, pride in having a service job, cultural conditions, and a great working environment are much more effectual. The US' problem isn't the former, it's the latter.

I have to add, seeing the inability of some posters to think from a different perspective on the discussion is a small metaphor for the state of the US. It's so strange how the US is so slow to wrap its head around adopting new practices (i'll refrain from citing examples, lest this thread breaks out into a hundred topics).

They don't "get around" it. If a server's wages+tips don't = minimum wage, the employer has to make up the difference.

the reason for the tip line is because a lot of credit card processors (the companies that handle the cc transactions for the restaurant) put it in there by default. the restaurants or mall place is not asking you for a tip, the line is just there by default normally.

This. Exactly. As the system is right now, I have have to and do tip well. However, I think the system is stupid. So I'd like it revamped.

Just tell me up front how much I'll pay. Just tell the waiters up front how much they'll make. How hard is that?

I think it's funny some of people say that if I don't tip because of bad waiting service, that I'm hurting the cook who shares in the tip. And then turn around and complain that people at Sonic and mall food joints shouldn't get tips. Aren't they cooking the food for you in the back as well?

Could someone please explain this to me? I always tip well wherever I go, however, this blows my mind. Why do I have to tip differently based on the prices? The service is usually no different, so I don't get this.

The system drives me crazy, but it is what it is so I always tip well.

Lot of restaurant/food places have point of sale systems that come with a pre programmed format for credit/ debit receipts. They might not have gone back into the system and deleted that. With smaller places often they dont have the know how or technical expertise to do that.

I don't see how it matters. If they change the system then your meal price will go up. I would rather be responsible for tipping so my waiters stay motivated.

Also if you are going to a nice establishment then obviously you should expect gratuity added to your bill.

    no ****ing clue.

Also, i find it quite funny how the OP is being called cheap...anyone who resorts to calling OP cheap is not grasping the discussion being had.

Big difference between Asia and the US... Coming from Asia I never have to tip, tip only when I want to and everything is still about the same price as a big city in the US. Not to mention there are no silly taxes. Man I miss Asia.

I'm guessing because the tip has a % my man.
Plus the thing with tipping is sketchy. If you tip cash then its fine however if you tip by card then the employee gets taxed on the tip (brutal huh).
On top of that you have to consider there low pay which prompts the world of the tip.
