Does anyone think tipping should be phased out of society?

Call me a cheapo, I don't care. I still find it absurd that customers are expected to tip when eating out. Servers are paid to do their job and provide good service. I'm not supposed to pay them extra. In fact, I'm not supposed to pay them at all. The restaurant's duty is to pay them.

You see, I don't care too much when I'm eating for 8 bucks and give them a 15% tip, it's when I go to these expensive restaurants that they really take complete and total advantage of the tipping phenomena.

If I go to a cheap vietnamese restaurant, pay 10 bucks for an entree, then tip a couple bucks, that's fine and dandy.

It's when I go to expensive restaurants where they really foot the bill. By comparison, if my bill is $70 at a steak restaurant I'm supposed to tip almost 15 bucks for good service? Did that server at the steak restaurant really deserve SEVEN TIMES the amount of tip that the server at the vietnamese restaurant did? Did he perform seven times better? The entire concept just makes zero sense, not to mention inconsistent inherently.

And also, those MANDATORY SERVICE CHARGES. I mean wow, just WOW. Might as well just make everything on the menu half-price and make a 100% service charge mandatory.

It's all a big giant con, and America has fallen for it.

So they start including tip in all the meal prices then.

    What's the damn difference.

Well companies don't pay servers well at all. They don't pay them good enough to pay even their own taxes. Most servers' paychecks are 0$. They pay their bills and take care of their families and pay Their insurance through the generosity of customers who appreciate not having to prepare a home cooked meal. It sounds to me that you don't do much cooking at home, if any.

Right. $2 an hour is more than enough to pay your bills and put food on the table.

Servers make somewhere along the lines of $2 an hour so they live off tips. If you can't tip, then don't eat out. Problem solved.

If you cant afford or are too cheap to tip at a decent restsurant, don't go. It's that simple.

Like I said, it's the restaurants job to pay their employees. Not mine.

pay your drivers better instead of having them rely on tips.

It's a good thing that waiters have more incentive than postal workers to serve you.

qft. people who complain about tipping always seem to forget the incentive part. in a dynamic environment like a restaurant things will get lost in the shuffle especially if there is no incentive involved.

While I've never been a server before (thus did not rely on tips) I've had many friends and girlfriends who were servers. While you might think it to be a menial task, being a server is not a fun job and part of the appeal of the job is that you get tips (cash in hand).

You are well within your right to not tip --- that's your perogative. It is customary here (in the U.S.) to tip. I tip according to how well the service was that I received whether its at a small diner or fancy restaurant. IMO if you have the means to dine out, you have the means to leave a tip to show appreciation that someone waited on you, served your food, made recommendations, gave advice about cuisine choices, etc.

tipping should be something extra you do for great service, but in US today it is part of the regular pay for waiters. The restaurants should pay the waiters more and if they perform really well you can tip them on top of that. This pay them $2-3 an hour and expect them to get tips is really a stupid system. They should just charge 10% more for the meals on the menu.
