That's not institutional, that's private capitalism at work.

Institutional = government regulations, subsidies, etc. that enable and encourage.

The juice comment is misleading. Yes it has a lot of suger, but it is NATURAL sugar. Not high fructoce corn syrup. The body processes them differently. I have lost 90lbs over the last year and it is all due to good eating habits. I eat organic chicken breast, all natural ground turkey, and grass fed beef. I drink nothing but water and eat organic frozen veggies. Granted it does not taste like a cheesburger, but I will live much longer and be healthier which is worth it. All fats are different, don't think the less fat you eat the healthier you are. We all need to stay away from processed foods and eat freash meats and vegetables. Steaks are great to eat and a good source of fat. I use coconut and olive oil to cook with and those are also really good sources of fat that are good for you. The model that is given for what we should be eating is greatly flawed.

If you only eat 1500 calories worth of Twinkies you won't get fat. In fact you will lose weight.

You forgot to add that you will die at a very young age. People pay too much attention to fat and calories instead of where those fat and calories are coming from. That is the part everyone needs to be focusing on. Sure people can buy lean cuisines and think they are doing good until you see how much sodium they contain and the ingredients list for baked chicken is a paragraph long filled with substances you can't even pronounce.

Politics & lobbying created the food pyramid.

    You can start here:

People are fat because they are impatient, lazy and stupid. People want food now and that is from Mcdonalds, Wendys, Starbucks, etc. People sit in their car to get to work just to sit at their desks. They get in their car to drive to get Jack in Box for lunch, then drive back to work to sit at their desk again. Then they get in their car to drive home and eat dinner then plop their ass on the couch and watch TV until they go to bed.

When your life is about sitting in a car, eating fast food and sitting in front of a computer at work, you will get fat. It doesn't matter who you are. Sure some people have better genes, metabolism, etc., but if you are eating fast food for lunch every day and sitting on your ass in your car or at a desk you are going to be fat and unhealthy.

Even though it is pasteurized, I swear by Naked smoothies.

    Green Machine is awesome.

Funny, Ive torn up the green machine-stuff is great. I do give it a double take every time I pass it at the store but drew the line in the last few months on pasteurization. I justify it based on how fast the product actually expires as to whether I'll consume it or not.

Used to buy the same OJ Kate, but opted for the freshly squeezed real deal. Flavor is so much better to me and I see them fresh squeezing it so I know it's not just a marketing ploy.

people need to move. it's not natural to be so sedentary.

i'm at terry hershey park a lot. i see more asian people (usually older, always trim btw) walking than any other race. just...walking. a lot of people think walking is ridiculous. in many parts of the world, it's customary to go on a long walk after each meal. you allow your food to digest, you burn a few cals, you have an opportunity for peace and relaxation.

walking is the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.

    walk, and then ZUMBAAAAAAA.

It's expensive as hell but Whole Foods is the only place I buy groceries. They need to build one in Katy, but since they don't have one there I'm glad they have one in Bellaire by my work. Plenty of organic juices, veggies, and meats.

Things are not going to change. You're still going to see fast food everywhere. You're still going to see a bunch of **** when you stop at the gas station to pump gas. You're still going to have pizza, hot dogs, and chips when you go to the ball game. We are always going to see those things. And who can blame the merchants-- it's easier to make food and less costly.

With that being said, it's up to the individual (you) to educate yourself in to eating properly and learning discipline towards all the ****ty food. I used to be a fat ass and lost 60 lbs and have managed to keep it off for over 3 years now. No, I don't have a perfect diet. I do give in to some pizza or fries every once in a while, and that's enough to have my guilty conscious sneak up on me on having to exercise.

    No refined sugar.
    No enriched white flour.

This alone will make you vastly healthier.
