I can't look up gameplay videos right now. Can someone give me a quick summary of what the game is like. Or what it plays like.
Diablo becomes a different game when you are geared/overpowered. Blizzard's strength is in making fun abilities and having a solid endgame that players enjoy. Not sure how you could completely write off D3 on a beta that let you only play levels 1-13 and a tiny portion of the first act.
It plays somewhat like the past Diablo games. Titan Quest would be another example. You point and click to attack, running through maze-like areas looking for the path to the next area. While doing this you encounter quests to progress the story. You aren't limited to a particular flow to the story, you can stay in one section for multiple runs to level characters or search for gear. the secondary function of the game is that it is a treasure finding game. The need for better items and upgrades is necessary to progress through the harder levels of the game. There is also supposed to be somewhat of a demo soon after release.
I'm looking forward to it. The beta wasn't anything super special, but it was the equivalent of playing up to Blood Raven in Diablo 2 in normal mode. In other words roughly 33% of the first act on the easiest difficulty, so of course it wasn't that challenging. Personally I like the changes to the skills and addition of the runes as well as some of the other changes. It's certainly a different game than D2, but I like what I have seen so far. I'm still curious to see what gold dumps they will have at high levels as from what I have read it isn't too terribly expensive to level your craftsmen. One of the problems with D2's economy was that gold had no value, so with the new Auction House centered on gold transactions it will be interesting to see how they keep the demand for gold high. I think I read that you use it for some of the gem crafting formulas, but I am curious if there is anything else since there doesn't appear to be a big max level required purchase equivalent to a mount or flying in WoW, or perhaps I just missed it if there is.
I was in the beta, and I have also pre-downloaded the client, it should be all ready. It took several hours, so I don't think it was just the installer. Can you point in the direction of the posts which talk about the need to delete folders from the beta, or perhaps a run-down here? Thanks
I know that eventually it gets to those levels in most rpg's but I was surprised that the curve wasn't a bit more gradual.
Because I couldn't even make it past lvl 6? It was just too boring for me. I was disappointed that it couldn't hold my attention for longer than it took me to download and install. I tried two classes, and neither required that I even watch the screen to progress. D1 and D2 weren't exactly difficult, but this game was definitely geared for a different audience. Yeah, yeah. it will be more difficult at the higher levels, but I might as well play an mmo if that is the play cycle for which they are aiming. That wasn't a beta, that was an advertisement/teaser. And if that is the content that they feel comfortable releasing, I'm going to pass. I've played the Diablo franchise since D1 release. But, activion blizzrad is no longer "blizzard". this is now bobby kotick's money machine.
I've never played Diablo, which is surprising to most people who know me. What is the control like? I've watched a few videos on Diablo 3 and it looks like you bind actions/attacks to your mouse and keys 1-4... but how is movement done? WASD?
You click the ground where you want to move to. Very simple movement. You can also hold the mouse button down to guide the character to a spot. Click ON an enemy to attack, special attacks are defaulted to keys 1-4. If you are a ranged attacker, you hold shift (I think) to not move while you are clicking on enemies, so you don't charge right into their faces and die. After maybe ten minutes of playing, it becomes second nature.
Hmm, OK. It was tough to tell from videos whether he was using the mouse to move or not. Clearly it was used to attack, but the fact that an attack is bound to the mouse lead me to think perhaps the mouse isn't being used for movement. It sounds a bit wonky, but I'll probably get used to it since so many others have.
The controls are pretty intuitive. In D3 you unlock new hotkey slots every few levels, and you can remap what skills go to what hotkey in any combination you want, and even remap what key activates the hotkey.
Here is the info about the beta files. I would have put them in earlier, but Blizzard is blocked at work.
Woo! Got my shipping confirmation email from Best Buy instead of the "too many preorders, you're boned" I've been afraid of. Collector's Edition probably won't get here until Tuesday afternoon, but I can live with that.
Blizzard just posted a nice little introductory video for people who aren't so familiar with the Diablo games. It's a nice short summation of the classes and features: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/geuAc8F7Gt0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
video is so cheesy... felt like some old thing i'd find from a demo CD from a game magazine a dozen years ago...
