    Hey Guys,

We moved into our house about a year ago. The front door the house came with is nice but doesn't have any glass and doesn't let through any light. Our hallway is really dark right now. We were looking to either add some glass if we can find someone who specializes in it or replace the door altogether. Do you guys know anyone here in Houston?

The door kind of looks like this:

Getting it customized can/would be more expensive than replacing the whole door. So assuming you are looking for a door replacement there are 3 types: Metal, Fiberglass and Wood. I'd stay away from metal. It's a poor insulator and dents easily. Wood has a nice look but if the door is in the sunlight for most of the day, then you will have maintenance issues. Fiberglass can be wood simulated or painted like wood or just painted and it's has a good R value. You can check out some prices and styles at the box stores (Lowes and Home Depot). I had them install a new front door (we had the same issue) in my old house and was very pleased the results.

There's a place on the Gulf freeway @ Park Place behind Kelleys Restaurant. Beautiful doors at a great price. They can take out the old door and install the new door for you.

The lady who runs the place name is Gloria.

Yeah, the house we bought was built in 2006, so the door has been exposed to direct sunlight for about 7 or 8 years now. It definitely needs to be refinished. But I think we're looking to replace it altogether with a door with glass to let more light in. I pass up this place on I-45 every now and then, I might check it out: http://www.doorclearancecenter.com/

I will get the name on my way home. I shopped around and they were a lot less expensive than any other place I went to. It's a family run one location business.

You definately should stay away from metal doors then. That sun will cook the metal which will transfer inside. You may not think it will make much of a difference but I can almost guarantee you will notice a change in temp (much hotter) when you walk into the entry.

And rep to rhadamanthus for the adeelsidddiqui reference. LOL - his home improvement threads still crack me up.

New door. You're going to have all sorts of issues with a door that wasn't originally engineered to have a window.

Bumping this old thread to ask about these posts. ^^^

I stopped by the one on I-45 and the doors look really nice. They also have another location on I-10 East around Northshore, it's closer to my house but I haven't checked this one out yet.

$650 for stained wood, decorative glass, and pre-hung on frame. Can anyone else vouch for this place and their quality? Any other suggestions on where to shop for a nice wood and glass front door?
