What the hell? The premise is the same. Hate a group of people for something that they cannot control. Hating gays for being gay is no different from hating blacks for being black. It is this kind of ignorant, backwards, nonsense that prevents us from moving forward in the arena of civil rights.

Here how y'all would love for this to play out. 1. Get him to make a public statement how he favors gay marriage. 2. Once elected, he likely will be unable to actually pass any legislation or he softens his position. 3. Attack him for being a liar despite that the new position favors of conservatives. The answer is obviously that he has made a cynical but realistic judgment that expressing a non-bigoted view could be seriously harmful to him in his re-election race. I have always believed he was being dishonest on this issue for political expediency. I think the same is probably true of a lot of politicians, on both sides of the aisle. So I'm very disappointed about it, of course. I wish that my president, my party's president, the president I voted for, gave money to, ardently supported and perhaps even more ardently support now would do the right thing here. But can you blame him? It's a cynical calculation, but it's not a stupid one. So, can you blame him? Well, I mean you can but that's what that saying about "the perfect being the enemy of the good" was invented for. And the trend (apart from the deep south anyway) is moving quickly in favor of marriage equality throughout the country. For the second year in a row gay marriage rights were supported at 50% or higher by participants in national Gallup polls. In four years I expect it will be clearly safe to support marriage equality and I predict that both major party candidates will openly support it. But while I'm disappointed in Obama's cynicism (and what I believe to be his dishonesty too) in this case, he is better at politics than I am. And we need him to win. How'd I do, Sam Fisher?
Don't try to be supportive of African Americans when your posting history on this forum has been one characterized with racist undertones. Are you kidding me? We know how this thread will end. You have unresolved issues with "the blacks" as you've called them and, most likely, gays. But, you try to hide this by creating a thread about Obama's opinions. Nice try.
No, though they would be rightfully offended by your efforts to pretend to champion their cause. It is exactly the same topic which is: As long as I'm not hurting anyone I should have equal right to pursue my happiness regardless of color, sexual orientation, religion, personal bathing habits, choice of breakfast cereals, taste in fashion or anything else you grow in your garden that is none of the world's business. First of all, I'm glad you're such a supporter of the struggle for minorities against institutionalized racism, especially for those who have practiced civil disobedience in the past. While your previous posting history has always indicated teeming anger, angst, and a pathological desire to be hated by being a contrarian at any cost, being around such calming influences on this board have certainly expanded your world view. I do agree that it is difficult to compare the struggles of gay Americans to those of black Americans; certainly the latter had a much bigger hole to climb out of, while for the most part, I believe much of the culture war being fought today builds on the work that those great social pioneers you so respect did in fighting for equal rights. Nevertheless, I believe you misunderstood my post's intention; I was merely commenting on the recent historical trends with regards to broad acceptance of once vilified minorities. Already, it has become almost taboo to be openly hostile towards those who identify as gay or lesbian; demographic trends point towards an inevitability of popular support. While your personal feelings might be horrified at the thought, the next generation will likely see the past 20 years of homophobia and bigotry the same way mine looks at the horrific racism of the 60s. The push for marriage equality might not have a hero like Dr. King, or have people who have suffered as much as the pioneers of the civil rights era, but it doesn't seem like it needs such a hero; all it needs is time and the passing of the baby boomer generation.

That is my ideal but marriage has been a state institution since ancient times. There is a far greater chance that the US goes onto the gold standard than government get out of the marriage business.
Why would this be ideal? Marriage determines a lot of legal things like health benefits pension etc. Do you want every one of these things to be done on a case be case basis.
