I haven't seen too many games from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but the statistics seem to highly favour him, in many categories, like scoring, championships, number of MVPs. People say, if they had block shots as a statistical measure from the beginning of Kareem's career, that he would be the all-time leader in blocked shots.

However, when I see full game footage of Hakeem; he was such a well rounded player, possessing guard-like skills that are generally considered above and beyond that of a typical big man, both on offense and defense. Most analysts would agree with the above sentiments.

I'm hoping to see the different view points, accounting for maybe a few hypothetical situations to seek a well rounded viewpoint, for example, would you say Hakeem was better than Kareem in his peak? Or if Kareem, being such a consistant offensive force over such a long career, has the edge of Hakeem who had a myriad of injuries to deal with, limiting his performance later on in his career.

Personally, from what I've seen and what I can tell from statistics and a total of 2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar games against Houston, I would say the edge would be to Kareem. I have a very faded memory, but at an old age, I remember him dominating the game with a young athletic Olajuwon. He has had a bit more success, both in the rings department and individual accolades.

However, if I ever want to model my game after someone, it would without a doubt, be Hakeem.

    Thoughts?

Both had long successful careers. Kareem had the hook shot, Hakeem had the dream shake. Kareem had more MVPs and championships, Hakeem has more Defensive player awards. Kareem has most points all time, Hakeem has most blocks all time. Almost offsetting if you ask me. Hakeem is in my favor of course :)

I would also just like to make a quick note, saying that, if I were to choose on the basis of who would be a better ambassador for the franchise; I would also choose Hakeem. That would be based on his personality as accounted for by many of his team mates and opposition over the years.

My unbiased opinion is Kareem. My biased opinion is of course Hakeem.

But as an unbiased observer, I think Kareem takes it. Frankly, one could argue that Kareem should be #1 on the all-time center list.

In the never ending Chamberlain vs. Russell debate, the argument always comes down to Chamberlain seemed to have the better game and more dominant stats. Russell seemed to be more of a team player and "winner". Kareem solves that problem in my opinion. Moreover, he played as part of the more modern era. Modern as in the last 40 years, so he wasn't just some 7'2 guy playing against a bunch of 6'9 centers, as one could possibly argue against both Chamberlain and Russell.

Kareem had 6 championships, 6 MVPs, all time points leader, played for the most dominant college team ever, 19 time NBA all-star (think about that, 19 times!), rookie of the year, etc. Dude was even on a dominant high school team. Whereever he played, he won. He has the stats and the championships. He had as dominant a single move as you'll find in NBA history.

I vote Kareem. Sorry for being a non-homer!

Kareem would have just ended up running to LA anyways. Hakeem stayed and won us 2 championships.

Kareem and Hakeem are 1 and 2 for me. Not a big Wilt fan, so there's that.

Just look what Hakeem did with Kareem back in 86 and you have your answer.

    Thanks.

Younger posters need to learn Rockets history first.

Kareem in '85-'86 was markedly better than Hakeem was in '00-'01.

A lot of people seem to evaluate KAJ based on the player he was in his mid-to-late 30s. The guy did average 28/14 through his first 12 seasons, and remained productive for another 6-7 years. He had both a high peak and remarkable longevity.

Kareem and it's not even close. There is at least 3 centers greater than Hakeem.

So why would you take Hakeem over Kareem?

Kareem had the better support through out his career. Hakeem had to carry the Rockets alone for about 8 years of his career. In this case it is very difficult to play at a high level till 40.

I agree, move Hakeem to the 4. Fill in with Oscar, Larry and Michael.

For a basketball team? Hakeem. To act in a legendary scene in a comedy movie? Lew. (His momma call him Lew. I'm a gonna call him Lew.)
