I know. I'm not saying they're the best regime in football, or even close to it, but you cant argue that they haven't taken significant steps forward.
Sure you can. The 2-14 season was in 2005. They first made the playoffs in 2011. In a league where teams continually make big leaps from one year to the next the fact that the Texans took 6 years to become respectable after such a terrible season does not point to "significant steps". It suggests that the team was mediocre to bad enough that they finally got enough talent in to have a winning playoff season - something that has happened to just about every other team in the league at least once since Kubiak was hired.
The Smithiak regime is 47-49. Not even average. Last year was nice, but i would wait until at least midseason and see how the team is doing.
This pisses me off. Foster has to earn his money but the exec and coach get the extension. Show me you can do it twice KUBIAK!!!! Then they wonder why the players association b****es about the the league
It depends on the position. Some bad GM's can luck into some franchise QB's that just make them look good regardless. Cases in point: 1. Post-Elway Shanahan all of a sudden wasn't such a "genius" anymore. 2. What happened to Bill Polian when Manning got hurt? Oh yeah all his horrible draft picks and personnel moves came out and he was fired. Manning covers up years and years of first round busts like that. 3. Lance Zierlein likes to predict it, but I agree. Watch what happens to Belichek when Brady retires. He hasn't exactly drafted well these last five years either. So nope, in those cases I would say that a player was more important than coach/GM. But probably you're right in this situation by saying that management or a coach *cough*SonofBum*cough* is more important than one guy on our team.
I'd say both are about above average and with the likelihood being that we're in store for another successful season, why not lock them up for a few more years before their stock rises? I was anti-Kubiak for years but I don't think we're in a position where we have the leisure to change coaches, at least not for a couple more years. Also Gary knows quarterbacks and if there is something I've been worried about for a while now its Schaub's health, and if he goes down again and we have to look at the possibility of a future without Matt then I want Kubiak here making the call for a potential new QB. As for Smith, he's solid on draft night particularly with picking defensive players if you ignore the Kareem Jackson flop, but hey everyone makes mistakes and we were pretty desperate for a corner.
You seem to be under the impression that as long as you wait long enough, a team will be successful. You don't just eventually get good talent. You have to evaluate, draft, and develop it. It takes great performances from everyone involved, both on the field and in the front office. Sure, it took Smithiak a while to get this team to contend, and most owners would have fired their HC sooner. But for some reason, McNair decided to stick with these guys, and they ended up getting it done, and now were set up to be successful for a long time. I say they've earned themselves at least a small vote of confidence.
I feel coaching contracts should all be written as: 8 year deal first 3 years guaranteed 4th year becomes guaranteed if playoffs made in either the 2nd or 3rd year 5th year becomes guaranteed if playoffs made twice in the first 4 years 6th year becomes guaranteed if playoffs made twice in years 3-5 7th and 8th years becomes guaranteed if playoffs made three times in years 1-6
IF Arian Foster had to show he could do it again for a second season before he could get an extension and the money he deserved then Smithiak should have to do the same! Rocket River
Here is my issue Smithiak - they sold the future to get to the playoffs They did this because they knew they were fired if they didn't so They got Wade. The spent like madmen and sacrificed the future to make the plays offs because Either 1. They made the playoffs and then they can sort out the contracts later or 2. They get fired and let the next rigime deal with the contracts Well . .. now they have to deal with the contracts they goto fa let's see how they do it. . . . before extending them forever so far 40% of the line is gone Demerco gone Williams gone let's see how they do before we give them a parade and a lifetime pass Rocket River
No need to extend either of their contracts at this time. Why do they deserve an extension?? Rick Smith finally had a good offseason last year after a long time but left team in a tough spot this offseason in terms of salary cap space. It's not exactly the same scenario but I'm getting the same feeling I got when Astros gave Cecil Cooper an extension with a year still left on his current contract then fired him a few months later. I hope Bob McNair isn't just throwing away his money.
first off, stop trying to equate the player vs coach/gm in terms of "proving it twice". It's not the same thing at all. Second, Kubes and Smith did have some growing pains early in their careers here but I think they have proven that they can/have learned from them and if you had to answer right now, it's hard to say they havent done a good job. Third, this is more about giving the team stability as opposed to having the question hang over everyones head of whether or not they should be resigned. Fourth, assuming the texans have another good year, it's better to sign them now then get into a bidding war at the end of the year
i'm referring to having to pay Kubes and/or Smith more because their stock would be that much higher (assuming they have another quality year). Sorry if that easy to understand idea wasn't easy enough
