Seriously, if your critique of obama is that he celebrated his decision to take down bin laden. just refer to him as an uppity negro because when i hear republicans use this line of attack, its all i hear anyway.

It's not a race issue, it's a politics issue. Obama could be any race and the argument would still be the same. That's how politics are played. You're hearing what you want to hear.

No, it doesn't. It plays into the fact that he's a Democrat and those calling him arrogant are Republicans. If you want to ignore that, go ahead.

    So what?

I'm half-Japanese, half-white. My Japanese mother came here forty years ago, meaning that she never suffered from the discrimination that a lot of Japanese-Americans did. And I've never considered myself white. What's the difference?

the word negro has slave connotations

Obama's family wasn't slaves -- they owned slaves

therefore pgabriel shouldn't call Obama a negro (among other reasons)

I hope our president is arrogant. They need some arrogance in order to do their job. Bush 1 and 2 were arrogant, Clinton was arrogant, Reagan was arrogant - not sure about Carter.

It's an easy and instinctual negative inference that plays to the over 50 age group that still harbors racial discrimination from their early socialization. (I try hard to keep mine down but it is a part of me nonetheless)

It's just a political mind game from highly paid consultants. Tis' the season!

people called Bush arrogant more often than anyone calls Obama arrogant.

Should we title a thread about that "honky Bush"

...didn't think so. Arrogant does NOT equal racial slur..sorry

Seriously, PGab, while there may be racial undertones, it reads more like politics to me.

Bush's arrogance was more about his lack of need for information; certainly from outside his neocon circle. Arrogance as in 'willfully uninformed'. Maybe Presidential arrogance is only arrogance when you're wrong. If you're right, it's leadership.

But the undertones , they are 100% calculated.

Race is a staple of Republican political strategy. You're being completely naive.

If George W. Bush was black I wonder how much leeway the media would have had to make fun of his intelligence. If people are being called racist for calling Obama arrogant I don't think there is anyway people could touch calling a black president dumb.

Obama is half white. Was raised by white mother/ grandparents. Went to predominantly white institutions. Other than his skin color he is pretty much white.

pgabs is making a blanket statement that anyone who thinks Obama is being arrogant for celebrating his action wrt Bin Laden's death is a racist. I don't believe this has to be true.

I'm not being naive, nor am I ignoring the likelihood that there are racial undertones to the way the criticism has been played out across party lines and in the media.

I am arguing that this is predominantly a political issue irrespective or race. As many have pointed out here, our past non-black president's have also been criticized as being arrogant before. Because it's a criticism that works when the target audience of said criticism are those already disheartened with or on the fence about the sitting president. Arrogance may actually be a positive trait for our Commander in Chief, but it's not a trait, generally, with positive association. I don't like arrogant people generally, and even when I recognize said arrogance as necessary and beneficial, I still don't like it.

It's very easy to say "That arrogant SOB". It's probably equally as easy for some to say "That arrogant uppity negro SOB"... but the difference between the first and the second is a result of a person's underlying core beliefs, not the skin color of the SOB in question.

I like Obama and have no problem with what he's done. But I believe it to be folly to argue that anyone calling him arrogant must be a racist, since Obama is black.

I am sure that there is an element of racism. I think what it is that Republicans do not like Obama because he is a democrate and is powerful, so they look for anything ugly to say or criticize him about... they have tried calling him a muslim, unamerican, black, eats dog, etc...

I dont think it is as simple as "we hate him because he is black.".... having said that, they have no problem exploiting the situation.
