He deserves to have contract through this and next season, but I'm afraid this is gonna be some 4-year extension. If we don't follow through with the improvement everyone is expecting, people are not going to be happy. This regime has generally shown slow but gradual improvement, but they haven't taken the next step. The NFL is way too fickle to just assume that will happen.
The coaches get guaranteed contracts Those guys deserve nothing. If they do well again this year then maybe.
Semi-interesting that Phillips isn't mentioned there, but it is almost a given that Wade will jump ship once a HC position is dangled in front of him.
I never had a problem with Kubiak coaching this team. His teams were great offensively, it's just he was given terrible defensive teams. Good for him and Rick Smith, who's done a fantastic job drafting (except the bust that is Kareem Jackson) these past 6 seasons.
Phillips contract is up after the 2013 season. I imagine that Bob isn't going to write him a really phat check until he's either offered a HC job or his contract runs out, whichever comes first.
How many head coaches have been hired by a new team after they have reached 65+ years of age? Vermeil was 64 prior to his last coaching job, Parcells 61. I just don't see Phillips being offered a head coaching job.
Haven't taken the next step? The team was 2-14 before they got here. Last season we won the division and go to the second round of the playoffs. Your steps must be HUGE.
Doubtful. He's at "Fritz Shurmur - Ted Marchibroda - Monte Kiffin" stage in his career. People were underwhelmed last year when the Texans hired him as DC - imagine how lead-balloonish it would be if you tried to pitch a portly white haired 65-year old as the new face of the Jaguars or whatever....not going to happen unless he's willing to work for peanuts for a desperate, super-cheap owner (Buffalo?....oh wait....) Oh, and also - I'm surprised Kubiak's success last season didn't net him a 10-year deal from big Bob...?
To be fair, those 2 have been here for a long ass time and have 1 playoff win under their belts. I support the staff. Just saying...
Might as well sign them up for a while, because with the way the AFC South is shaping up, the Texans should own it for the next 4-5 years. Don't want to get stuck having to extend Kubiak right after a 3 year streak of division titles.
^^ during this year's draft I learned one thing. well, not really, i knew but when I processed it..it didn't feel right. Kansas city has one playoff victory since 1993. we've weathered the storm now it's time to catch some shrimp. you anything about shrimp?=) yes, extend their contracts.
I agree. The good news: if he's not going to get another shot at HC, I imagine this ranks as his best-case plan B and will likely be his last coaching gig. He's revered, well-paid and more or less treated like a head coach, minus all the responsibility and blame. On some level, that has to be appealing. As for the extensions - whether they deserve 'em or not, I do admire McNair's plan (on paper): He's committing to a foundation and continued continuity. That's a strong organizational model. (Again, on paper.) It sure beats the last owner's model - which was disruptive chaos and total "on-the-fly" planning. When is Kubiak's deal up, anyway? This is probably a year too early - I'd like to see them "prove" themselves. But I do like the stability.
Kubiak & Smith's deal expire after this season. I'm expecting a 3 year extension with a 4th year option.
