we traded rudy gay for him. so you tell me, whether this battier dude is overrated.

    so much for "ASSETS"

but on an unbiased note, battier's defense is really overrated. he is no better than Parsons or Landry Fields. Can't remember him shutting anyone down, ever. Kobe's stats against the Rockets were virtually the same before, and after, the Battier acquisition.

i really don't know why battier is getting heavy, and i mean heavy, minutes on a title-aspiring team with LBJ Wade and Bosh, the Miami Heat. If they really wanted a defender, why not just go out there and sign a few defensive specialists? Grab a Danny Green from somewhere, and any supposed "offset" between battier's defensive and the new guy's defense can surely be compensated by the new guy's offense.

... How is everybody ignoring how Melo played in the first three games of the series...?

Shane is just old now. He's 34. Father time, as they say, is undefeated.

His reputation as an elite defender is as much a myth as Kobe's all-nba 1st team defense year in and year out.

The numbers, which Spoelstra is a devotee of, crush him here. In the series, Anthony has shot 12-of-41 (29 percent) with James guarding him and scored 31 points including free throws. With Battier on Anthony, the Knicks star is 20-of-38 (53 percent) and has scored 56 points.

I stopped liking Battier when he admitted in an interview that he never cared to improve his offense because it didn't interest him. What is that..

There is a huge difference between Melo vs Lebron and Melo vs Battier.

Battier has been overrated for about 2 years now. Before that he wasn't but he has been on a steady decline. It's starting to be obvious he is a good defender still but not a great defender. That's why I voted overrated right now, but not by much.

Battier has been garbage all yr. Everytime melo saw him,he either posted or just shot over him. Top that off,his shooting has been subpar too.

Battier is over the hill and overrated now. Parsons is better. Imagine the Heat with Parsons replacing the slow ineffective Battier.

Shane Battier just might be the most mediocre player to ever play in the NBA. Average height, average athleticism, decent defender, not much of an offensive game (actually displayed more promise back in college), and pretty much average all around. We gave up Rudy Gay for him and as far as I can see Rudy Gay has already succeeded Shane Battier as a basketball player.

In his early days, yeah he was a legit defender. I really respected him.

Now......... hell no, his defense is gone. He should retire, I think. He should spend time with his family now, I'm pretty sure he's made enough money by now.

In my opinion, I think that's fairly accurate. He never did bring much on the offensive end and his defense was decent for awhile, but has been deteriorating for quite some time now. Average doesn't mean your bad, just means you can hold your own, but you aren't going to wow anyone, which is exactly what Shane Battier is.

Battier's defense has never been average, not even now. He's still a better perimeter defender than 80% of the league in his position.

I don't know about latter, but I think his overall game is pretty average. His defense is able to cover up for his offensive deficiencies. Again, simply an opinion. I like Battier, but he is as average as it gets.

If LeBron is such a great defender (some people even say he is the best defensive player in the league lol) then why wasn't he on Melo the whole game?

Love Battier, but I think his performance has worsened and he is partly living off the reputation he built before. Glad Morey was wise enough to see it coming.
