Everyone is cut out for education, at varying levels. We're not all cut out for 9-5's but we can all benefit from more education in our desired/chosen career paths. As for the thread topic...can you cheat your way to a PhD? I always thought these involved a much closer relationship with the professors which made it impossible to cheat your way through. And, don't you have to defend your thesis in some intense interview?
Even the title of his dissertation is awkward: How Leaders Utilize Humor or Seriousness in Leadership Styles
SlamOnline is garbage journalism. The real title is "The Duality of Humor and Aggression in Leadership Styles"
Because they gave Shaq a PhD after doing coursework part-time and online in 4.5 years. I think rimbuad and B-Bob have hit on the thing correctly. Barry is a liberal arts undergraduate institution that has expanded to offer some professional degrees -- business, nursing, whatever. They might call this degree a doctorate, but it is essentially a professional degree, like an MBA. So congrats to Shaq for graduating and all. But, doctor? C'mon.
I love how folx are trying to ***** on this Meanwhile. . they will turn around and b**ch about One and Done Then turn around and b**ch about some player being arrested or some other silliness then turn around . .and. . and. . .well. . Turn around and just be a b*8ch No matter that . . this is a good deal Of all the players in the NBA - Shaq is on the side of players I would not be mad if my child called him a role model . Hate his game . . because it was effective Hate his humor . . because it is sophmoric [sp?] Hate his commentary . . because it is commentary but hating him getting a degree . . .that is BS Since it is so easy to get a PHD from this school . . . Let's all go get one . .. then we can all be Dr. Clutchfans Somehow . . . i doubt that happens Rocket River
This. Huge difference between EdD and PhD. Nonetheless, I give him props for doing coursework and a thesis, even if it is diluted, when he has plenty of other stuff he could be doing with his time. Although it very well may be that the only added value to him is to his brand and his own ego, I think it's good that it signals that he actually values an education, regardless of whether he's learned anything.
This is not like Alec Baldwin passing his bar exam. Props to shaq for following through and furthering his "education" but no way is he an expert at anything intellectual.
Yes, people need to stop posting that he got a PhD. He did NOT. I am not bagging on Shaq, he can do whatever he wants and if he wants to waste 4.5 years for a useless piece of paper, there are worse things he can be doing. What I don't like and am posting about is the superficial glorification of him being a "Dr" or that this is some amazing feat. Education is great and it is great that he completed his undergraduate degree as so many do not. Let's just not cheapen the overal quality and expectation of higher education, much less graduate level education.
