Cinco de Mayo isn't actually Mexico's, or anyone's, independence day if memory serves.

Mexico beat the French army in a battle. I think they lost the war though. France was trying to get back some money they loaned to Mexico.

Isn't it "Go to a Mexican Restaurant Day"?

Would be France to get money taken from them and then get their asses kicked in a fight because of it. Double pwnage.

It's a celebration of France losing a battle. Technically everyday could be a holiday for that reason.

Really it is more like a Mexican American day. It is not really celebrated in Mexico.

None of the above. From the seventh grade history textbook, believe it was something about French invading Mexico to collect debts. Probably under the same threat, they also helped guarantee Haiti's long term poverty by collecting war reparations for several years after independence.

Maybe one of the reasons the French don't seem to take so much umbrage for being falsely labeled as "weak" nowadays is because, when they were strong and powerful, they were somewhat unpleasant.

Yep this is correct. Thy are just trying to make it like St Pattys day. Sell a lot of beer and mexican food.

Its worked so far. I always look at it as a fake mexican holiday. but nothing wrong with that.
