I know some posters here agree with the sentiment . .
Free speech yadda yadda. He makes the State of Georgia and Southerners generally -- and therefore, me -- look bad for reasons that have nothing at all to do with the president. I'd like to say that he'll reap what he sows and his business will be hurt by offending and embarassing the people of Paulding County when his customers decide to take their business elsewhere. But, I'm worried that they won't. Maybe the bad things Yankees say about us Southerners are right. And, maybe I should quit my fantasy that the South has come a long way since Jim Crow and that we're not like that anymore. Maybe I should stop thinking that the Deep South Southerner is kinsman to a Southerner from comparatively progressive Houston, TX. Not because a jack-ass put up a sign like that, but because he was able to put it up without fearing the reaction he would get, and because the market won't really punish it in the end.
Posters on a NBA message board agree with this sentiment? I don't frequent the D&D too often but I doubt this.
Have you seen the actual sign? Not exactly a giant billboard on a major thoroughfare. Just some ignorant redneck putting a POS sign in front of his obscure hole of a restaurant to get attention. Kind of a non-story, if you ask me.
You sweet sweet soul, stay away from the D&D, keep your innocence. You will never look at some posters the same, seriously.
Yes, a minor story, and it may seem a stretch to derive a grand meta-story from one racist in suburban Atlanta. It just had me thinking of my visits to Georgia and thinking about the regulars of this place that walk past his sign to go eat some lunch. If he was in a liberal town, the peer pressure to take it down would be too much to bear -- death threats from loonies, everyone calling him a racist on local tv, demonstrations maybe, a bad reputation, and a huge loss of business. Even in not-liberal towns outside the South, he couldn't get away with it as a practical matter. But, from what I've seen of Georgia, I don't expect he'll suffer much for this stunt. Even if people don't approve, they won't disapprove very strongly. That says something about Georgia. I'm hoping they prove me wrong.
A buddy of mine does remodeling as a side job and has been working on a bathroom for one of his friends' mother. He had some people out to quote installation of the glass for the shower and one of the companies sent out a woman who threw the 'n word' around a bit. My buddy discussed it with the customer and they decided to go with a quote that was a couple of hundred dollars higher, but didn't bring with it the possibility of supporting overt racists. Things are probably different in rural Georgia, but there are plenty of us who will vote against racism, even when it affects our wallets.
I have seen similar signs in Illinois while driving, but they tend to be more subtle with "pleasant" requests to "go back to Africa" or "unamerican", etc. I do not think, from my experience that the South is more racist than the North (and certainly the midwest), but the racism is more overt in the South. As for the sign... yeah, he has the right to put it up and I support that right... but I do not like it.
From the comments section in the article, people who live there say he does this whenever he wants to get attention and pick business up, and it works.
Yep there are plenty of racists in northern states. I wouldn't be surprised to see a sign like that in rural PA or Upstate NY.
I can tell you that you will see them in the midwest also..... Southern Illinois is about as bad as you will find when it comes to signs like that....
