For some reason this reminds me of the 2006 draft and what happened with Brandon Roy.

Someone mentioned sending trading #16 to NJ to complete our obligation to them in the Terrence Morris trade. I could see Morey trying this if he is unable to package the pick in a trade. I'm not sure the team is going to be real excited about bringing in so many rookies next season.

i would be ...excited about brining in a bunch of rookies next season, that is. I mean, we're not exactly going anywhere anyway. I think this has the potential to be a pretty good draft. Why not add two more talented rookies to the roster. It seems to be one of the organization's strengths anyway. Of course, ideally it'd be great to package some players and picks to move down and get a top player, but I like guys like Terrence Jones, John Henson, and Jermey Lamb. If these guys are available at the end of the lotto, into the mid-rounds, grab them and be happy about it, I say. We're still directionless as a franchise, so why not stockpile young talent? No way i give away the #16 pick to satisfy the NJ obligation!

Yea, I figured we'd have to take in salary but didn't suggest just drafting a player at #16 until we make a trade moving some players like Martin especially to make playing time for everyone. Center is a big need & I suggest Meyers Leonard at #14 but until we make trades to move players I don't see us bringing in 3 rookies just to sit on the bench!

Maybe enough to get to the 10th pick, but not much beyond that. Cost us similar picks plus a 3rd first rounder to move up to 7 for Eddie Griffin (I believe we had the 13th, 18th, and 20-something, but can't recall exactly off the top of my head).

Edit: Wow, I actually would have guessed them all correct since I was thinking 23rd, and it was the 13/18/23

NJ was definitely holding all the cards in that situation. They knew we'd bite.

Gawd, talk about not doing your due diligence in drafting Eddie. I won't go into an Eddie Griffin rant; he became such a sad tale.

If someone that Morey wants slides into that #9-#10 range, that's about what the #14 + #16 will get him.

He'll make some sort of effort to reach the top 5, but GMs almost never go for it. They always want Mr. Upside on his cheap rookie contract. Outside of the top 5/10, "upside" usually gives way to "what you see is what you get".

I loved the trade when it happened. Griffin had been discussed as a possible 1st overall in that draft. Now you think we could have had Joe Johnson, or kept all 3 picks and had our choice between Zach Randolph, Tony Parker, Gilbert Arenas, Gerald Wallace, & Mehmet Okur (though Parker is the only one that was a star for the team that drafted them). Of course we had kept all 3 in 1998, and ended up with very little. The 1998 draft only had one all-star (Lewis) past where our first pick was as opposed to the 2001 draft.

Good thought, agreed. I don't expect us to keep both picks (or if we do, one of them will be a stowaway).

The other option would be if the Rockets know who Philly wants, and have a couple of guys they like, they could trade the pick to someone wanting to get the guy Philly wants and still get the original guy on their board at 16. This would be similar to what Portland did to get Roy.
