I thought about this the other day, where would we be with a "younger" CD leading the front office charge instead of Morey? I wonder what our roster would look like today?
Morey would probably be better with a team with established stars. Cd would probably be better at getting stars.
Huh?? Dawson got three "stars" to the Rockets, McGrady, Francis, & Pippen. And the first two wouldn't go anywhere other than Houston. If someone say, I am going here it's a lot easier to get it done. Neither's decision had anything to do with Dawson.
Lowry would have a max deal right now. Oh wait Morey stole him from the end of the grizzlies bench. So we wouldn't have Lowry.
A few points: 1. When we talk about CD, we should probably include Rudy T. as part of th decision making team-- perhaps with even more of a say in some respects than CD did. From what I understand, Rudy T had much more of an influence on personnel matters than his successors Van Gundy, Adelman and McHale. 2. "Younger" CD became the GM in 1996. The team was able to acquired two older Hall of Famers, Barkley and Pippen in the early years. A big part of the team's ability to acquire Barkley and Pippen is that they already had Hakeem (plus Clyde or Barkley) on his roster. It is a lot easier to draw a star to a team when you already have one in the fold. This point is again illustrated in the acquisition of McGrady (wanted to come to Houston since Yao was already on the roster) and the Lebron/Bosh/Wade and, most recently, the Dwight/Deron/Brooklyn mess. 3. One has to give credit to CD for being able to trade for Steve Francis. It helps, though, for Steve Francis to have such strong anti-Vancouver feelings. Now if we can just get a high pick to say "Hell no, I won't go!" to the place that picked him. 4. I think one achievement by CD that needs to be recognized is negotiating Yao Ming's move to the NBA. From what I understand, it was not an easy effort at all. 5. The big issue with the CD reign was locking players into overblown contracts which hurt their cap situation. And I don't think this was an "old CD only" issue.
Great memories. I really miss those players. I love Hakeem, Clyde, Barkley, and Maloney. They were great players. I watched them a lot when I was a kid and they played hard. I remember Barkley was very fun to watch when he played here and I am glad Barkley were part of our Rockets. Clyde and Hakeem, of course, were big part of Rockets championship. Maloney was a good shooter. I will always remember them.
Those are arguably some of the worst moves in the history of basketball. One of the most memorable of the more obscure moves was the Glen Rice trade to Utah for Mr Man Boobs. So many of us were excited to have the expiring contract of Glen Rice as trade amo but instead he was sent to Utah along with a 2nd round pick for Man Boobs.
After reviewing the list of trades it was Rice and three 2nd round picks to Utah for Jon Ameeche and one 2nd round pick. Uuuuugggghhhhhhhh. Worst trade in the history of all trades.
