During the 80's and early 90's, no one would asking these questions. The good news is, Columbia is looking better these days.
I think the question you should be asking here is do you value your life? Or do you just enjoy getting drunk?
Well...I actually dont drink much when i go (which is surprising because its all you can drink). I just want to get away somewhere and relax. More than likely i will spend most of time at the resort. I dont really like going to bars out there.
If you aren't into the party scene, why don't you go elsewhere like Puerto Rico? Flights over there are pretty cheap and PR has a bit of everything for everyone. A great island.
Sup bro. It's relatively safe if you don't wander off and use common sense. I went in October of 2010 and it was bad ass. Take the drive out to Chichen itza (Mayan Archaeological Site) and take tons of pics. Also, please go to Xel-Ha. It's the most neat natural water park I've been to. (Seriously, go here) . If you do, jump off the cliff of courage. http://www.xelha.com/
Cancun is safe, I wouldnt go in bus from Houston to Mexico, passing by Monterrey, Sinaloa, etc. But landing in a plane is good. like other have said just be careful like if you were any other place. I have friends living there, and they say its a good place. You should visit the pyramids and stuff in Chichen Itzá.
I would've enjoyed Chichen Itza, but there were so many ******* vendors that it cheapened the experience.
if you're doing the excursion thing go for Xcaret. The night show will blow you away. If you're going to a resort -- they are completely and totally safe. Probably safer than your neighborhood.
Unfortunately, this is true. They are everywhere. However, a few of them do sell some pretty cool stuff
Do yourself a favor.... Head down to Puerto Morelos (about 30 miles south of Cancun if I remember correctly) Beautiful little fishing town. No resorts and great local food and swimming. Went there a few years ago and it is very nice.
I thought about going to Google Maps and finding some random town on there and telling you that it's a MUST SEE. However, I don't need any bad karma coming my way should you have chosen to believe me. At any rate, enjoy your vacation!
I spent 3 days there a few months ago. That block/street with all the hotels is very touristy and it's in their interest to make it appear safe. I went to these caves: http://www.riosecreto.com/tours_activities/riosecreto_entrance.asp It totals 100 per person, but well well well worth it!.
Love the clear blue water in Cancun. Need to get back there. Do the kids still hit up Senor Frogs, Bulldog, Coco Bongo, etc.?
What are some recommendations other than Mexico? For Christmas I want to do something for me and my girlfriend. I've been looking at cruises to Cancun, they are cheap, but I don't want to put her in danger. Where are some alternatives? Neither of us are the biggest beach goers, I'd love to check out the Mayan ruins, that is why the cruise to the Yucatan seems great. I love nature and trails. The dream is to go to Peru, but that's a few years down the road haha, my starting salary won't be enough for that.
Costa Rica. But if you're not beach goers, and it's during the winter, hit up the slopes. If beaches or the mountains arnt your thing, may I suggest call of duty, the next one comes out in november.
Yea i have done all of that . This will be my third time going out there. I just enjoy being away (from phones and email :grin. I may make xel-ha again, I skipped it last year. ANd no i will not be jumping off a cliff haha
Since its my third time going out there this might be a pretty cool change of pace. I usually allocate about 100 bucks and about one day to do an excursion.
