So this summer I am finally taking a well needed vacation after not taking one last year. I booked a trip to Cancun this summer.

I was there two years ago and had a great time. But now, with the chronicles latest article I am becoming a little concerned with the safety there(http://www.chron.com/news/houston-t...ans-killed-in-Mexico-continues-to-3518659.php).

Has anyone been there lately? I havent been there in two years.

Not really sure why I ask considering my trip is booked regardless. But just curious to know if anyone has had any bad experiences there. Or maybe someone from mexico knows some info about the area that doesnt show up on newspapers.

Cancun might as well be D.C.

    The security there is ridiculous.

the media likes to exaggerate just a bit. the horror stories make for great ratings. as long as you don't walk down a dark alley in Juarez with your popped collar polo shirt greeting the locals with, "what's up, carnal?" you'll be fine.

Go there every year, leaving in less than 4 weeks and will be my 8th trip. Hype is over blown.

Don't drink the water and don't get shot by a cartel and you should be fine.

In regards to all Mexico, dont be stupid, stick to major cities, and dont roam around alone(especailly after dark). This goes for just about everywhere in the world. Just don't be dumb and you'll be fine.

Was at Playa del Carmen this Feb.

Never felt any threat or concern. We took the collectivos (mini buses you just flag down from the highway) up the coast and to Tuluum, with kiddos several times -- at night and during the day. We never felt unsafe.

Try to blend. When you see a friend, just say "hey, how's it going, pendejo?"

Cancun is safe and nothing to be worried about. The parts of mexico that are dangerous are the border towns, Mexico City and Monterrey. I went there this past December and had no problems.

Also Cancun really isn't mexico imho. My family and I travel to San Luis to visit family, and we drive and well to say the least the drive there is a bit nerve racking. Each time we get stopped by a military check point I always fear that we are going to be stopped by a fake one.

a friend posted a pic of the Mexican president's visit to Houston on her facebook wall a week ago. I posted, "Ask him when can I visit Mexico without fear of coming back without my head."

    She deleted my post.

If you see three guys standing in a giant triangle on the street, turn around.

I know what you mean. A few years back all you worried about was giving bribe money to the cops that pull you over for "speeding." Yeah the only way we drive there is by day light and only travel on the Toll roads.

When I saw this driving back from mexico, I knew that things have changed.
