The Third Man is great and it has Welles as an actor. Based on where the OP is comming from, that might be a good next step.

And one of my favorites from that era is Only Angels Have Wings, though it is a bit more straightworward than the others. Jean Arthur + Cary Grant = cool.

Most unknown good romance film = Sylvia Scarlett. Amusing Grant & Hepburn romance.

Before Sunrise is my favorite romance. The triumphant power of conversation. But it's less than 30 years old.
The Shop Around the Corner (Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullavan as secret penpals who work with one another)
An Affair to Remember (Cary Grant version. this is a remake, but it's better than the original)
    Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn/Bogart version)
    I like Roman Holiday.
When Harry Met Sally. Also recent. Friend zone triumphant.

Alfred Hitchcock - The Man who Knew too much
    Dial M for Murder
I also liked a lot of world war II films
    Bridge on the river Kwai
    Where Eagles Dare
For Whom the Bell Tolls ( not world war ii but a classic, one of my favorite movies)
Absent Minded Professor ( The Jerry Lewis version is way better than the crap Disney made with Robin Williams)

Yeah, but wasn't Bogart 20 yrs older than her, and I'm just talking about the story line age. Plus, she first had to hots for his younger brother. Someone look up how old Bogart was in Sabrina vs Audrey.

man, those were the days! classic era.

that's why i'm addicted to Mad Men and want to be Roger Sterling

And it was a crush she had on the brother when she was ten. Eh.

    Same for Roman Holiday, also.

    It still happens today, though:

Keep us updated, especially on key things like realizing Orson Welles was Citizen Cane. Let us also know when you realize Peter Sellers had three roles in Dr. Strangelove.

So I tried to watch Notorious, and got bored after 20 - 30 minutes (maybe Hitchcock just isn't for me? But I'll try to finish it later) so I switched to Ben-Hur. And wow, this is a pretty good movie. I love the authenticity of the stunts. Makes me hate CGI nowadays. This movie must have cost a pretty penny. Though I'm only halfway so far, pretty long movie at three hours. Just paused to make a comment about it here.

Btw one of the things I hate about Hitchcock is those moments when two people are having a conversation and the camera shifts to one and the actor/actress tries to make it all dramatic. Like those moments with Ingrid talking to Cary in the first thirty moments. Those moments are ****ing cheesy and turns me off. The camerawork is also too basic, nothing like the ones I appreciate from Kubrick and Welles.

After completing Ben-Hur...... WOW. And yet another movie has vaulted into my top 10 movies of all-time. This movie had everything. Simply motha effing epic. That horse race was UNBELIEVABLE. Those guys getting run over by freaking horses looked so real.
