Hey guys, how about love stories? I couldn't buy into the chemistry between the two in Casablanca. I've seen Roman Holiday and it was decent but not great. As it stands, my favorite romantic movies are Shakespeare in Love and Eternal Sunshine. Have no favorites yet from old movies.
Still can't get over how good Citizen Kane was. Wow. Orson was a genius. And the actor that played Kane was awesome.
For these two statements alone, nobody should bother giving this man any more movie advice. I'm kidding - but I honestly can't fathom anyone thinking Shakespeare in Love is better than Casablanca or Roman Holiday. Nobody's mentioned Kurosawa films - at the very least, you should see Rashomon, and then maybe the Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Ikiru. I also really liked Ugetsu and Woman in the Dunes (not by Kurosawa), but I don't see you enjoying these. You might also enjoy all of Tourneur's films. Somebody mentioned Out of the Past, but he also did Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and Night of the Demon - all of which are considered horror gems (thought they're not scary in the way a modern film is). Classic 70s films that haven't been mentioned but I really like - The Conversation, Annie Hall, Five Easy Pieces. And everyone must see the greatest film of all time Spoiler
Not a love Story, but a great classic film is A Face in the Crowd. One of the best acting jobs I've ever seen. Maybe the best. For a comedy try The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. There are a ton of good screwball comedies many of which have been mentioned. I just thought of an under rated love story type movie that I enjoyed is Charge of the Light Brigade. The twist in the love story is what made me appreciate the movie. Cyrano de Bergerac with Jose Ferrer is also a good love story flick.
Shakespeare in Love was clever in its own right. Not the typical love story which made me enjoy it. From Kurosawa, I've seen two of his films. The first being Seven Samurai, which could have been much better if I had seen an HD copy of it, because the one I saw ruined my experience and made it feel very outdated. The other Kurosawa film was RAN, which was downright terrible and a waste of my damn time. From Woody Allen, I have seen Manhattan which I did was completely forgettable.
If you want a good love story, try Purple Rose of Cairo. Woody Allen isn't in that one, but it's a great story, and fits in with the genre of classic movies nicely. Another good one that fits in is My Favorite Year. The love story part in that is annoying and forgettable, but Peter O'Toole is amazing in it, and a lot of it is hilarious.
Sounds good, thanks. btw, just a reminder this thread is for all genres. Just looking for a damn good film that I've been missing out on. Like Citizen Kane, can't believe I watched it just yesterday.
Probably one of the best comedy of all times. ALL TIMEZ Funny, yet put things in perspective. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/oeeIuC77NVM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
FB - try not to have a stroke or heart attack, but I agree with you. I love A Face in the Crowd and I love those old screwball comedies too.
While I'm am drawing a blank on any particular film, if you are looking for romantic chemistry, you could check out some of the Bogart-Bacall or Hepburn-Tracy movies since they were couples in real life.
I remember from before that you did love a lot of the classics and screwball comedies that I love as well. Then I saw your list. A lot of awesome movies on there. I think I just saw Bringing Up Baby for the first time in forever recently. I had forgotten how good of a movie that one was. A Face in the Crowd is one of my all time favorite movies. So ahead of its time, and before I saw it I never imagined Andy Griffith was capable of such an amazing performance. I know it screwed up his life for decades afterward. So it makes me kind of sad, but it was a fantastic job. I knew since you were a Rockets fan, I wouldn't disagree with you about everything.
I'd put the Antoine Doinel series (Truffaut) except for the first one The 400 Blows in the romance section. Definately worth viewing if you haven't already. Eric Rohmer is another one but you mentioned not liking slower movies. His flicks aren't romantic in the the typical boy meets girl sense. The Spirit of the Beehive a spanish film is another one along those lines. You'll appreciate it more by watching James Whale's Frankenstein first.
You couldn't get into Hitchcock, and gave Lawance of Arabia 7 out of 10? I'm sorry, but I can't help you.
for other "romance movies" see Audrey Hepburn...she is the classic era Natalie Portman. Not to say Natalie does romance movies but I have a romantic attachment to Audrey like I do with Natalie. In the immortal words of Mars Blackmon please baby please baby please baby, baby baby please.
That poster is very misleading 'The story of twelve men as their women never knew them' ? That has nothing to do with the movie at all. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wfbDcBkJ8QQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
