My dad has several good Japanese friends through work. I'm in the same area which is in the sciences. I think, when you're a professional, especially in the sciences, the social norms you'll be operating in will be global norms rather than your country's norms. We scientists, normally get along, outside of the odd douchebag who looks to one-up on their research. So, I believe work is the best portal for making friends from different cultures, though, that'll be pretty trivial thing. There's a Chinese saying: Make friendship out of work, not work out of friendship.
