I may get flamed for this, but he is the main reason the spurs finished 1st in the west despite not ever being in the talks for contention, not having Manu for much of the season, and Duncan declining. He may not have MVP stats, but he had arguably the most impact on his team's performance this season. I don't like the Spurs, but he deserves the award or at least a top candidate. Thoughts? And Pop for Coach of the Year.
That's one criteria of many for MVP voting. For overall body of work including all criteria, the MVP will go to either KD or LeBron. Definitely should be in the MVP voting, probably 3rd, right behind those guys. Pop will most likely win COY imo.
No, he doesn't. He's definitely an underrated player (sort of), but don't underestimate the impact of Pop, that system, and Duncan - who even though he is declining, still provides the defensive anchor and base to the system, which is they first key to the success. Parker is not as important to his team as KD is to the Thunder, imo (even considering the Thunder have Harden to step up if KD went out).
he def should be in the conversation but unfortunately his individual stats will hold him back. 18.3/7.7 does not jump of the page like durant's 27.9/7.5/3.5 or lebron's 27.1/7.9/6.2

Although Parker's stats merit MVP talk, Durant and James just had better seasons, respectively, than Parker has had; also, the Thunder and Heat have records right up there with the Spurs, so that also hurts Parker's case. Parker might be considered more strongly if the Spurs were the absolute best team in the league, statistics-wise; say, if the Spurs had 6 or more wins than OKC / Miami.
1st MVP in a while that is actually between the 2 best players in the L as they also play for top 3 teams. Very refreshing. I'm sorry, but "best player" on best team doesn't cut it if your stats aren't at least on the next level. The Steve Nash/Rose have really diminished the MVP aware in my eyes lately.
For years TP has been underrated, but no way he deserves MVP. Pop should be COY with Thibs next in line.
I think JVG said it best during a game telecast, when, iirc, he said there should be a Most Valuable Player award and a Most Outstanding Player award. MVP = Nash / Rose (when they won theirs) MOP = James / Durant (this year)
James/Durant impact the game more than TP does, and it's not even close. Hell, CP3 impacts the game moreso than Durant; he's making a strong push for #2.
Rose won last year on the premise that he "carried" the team and the bulls would basically suck balls without him (bring in boozer/noah missed 50 games combined and they still got the best record). I think Thibs/Pop would be COY, instead of their best players winning MVPs. What the Bulls/Spurs are doing are more of the coaches' doing rather than MVP performances from Rose/TP. Look at the phenomenal job Thibs does this year without Rose. The same argument for Rose winning the MVP last year is now tossed out the window b/c the team is 18-9 without him.
15.5/11.5 with ridiculous efficiency. people need to go look back on that year. kg couldn't win it that year because the wolves didn't even make the playoffs. some felt dirk should have won it but his team was only a 4th seed. shaq's numbers while good wasn't really mvp caliber as well. no one really stood out that year.
Shaq put up 23 points, 10 boards, ridiculous 60% fg, 3 assists, 2 blocks in just 34 minutes a game with a PER of 27. That's MVP stuff. He should have won it that year by far, but the Suns' rise out of nowhere got a lot of hype.
shaq at that point had a career lows in rebounds and ft% as well. nash lead the league in assist by a large margin with 11.5 while 2nd was marbury with 9.0 not to mention the suns going from a 29 win team to number 1 in the west with nash helped as well. it was close (1066.0 to 1032.). but most feel nash got it from shaq really being on the decline.
