"Art" maybe the new version of "I didn't know it was offensive"
    that people hide behind

    This is offensive
    It is racist
IT is all of it . .. but hey
    they didn't care
a healthy number here don't care
    and
Then when it happens again . . . everyone will act like it is a surprise again

There actually been art along similar lines. Art is inherently subjective and a lot of "political" art is meant to offend common sensibilities. For example Kara Walker's art.

Kara Walker certainly isn't celebrating racism and the degradation of women but is making a statement through art.

I am curious though do you find Spike Lee (who as noted above used black face in a movie), Kara Walker, and Chris Ofili (who uses elephant dung in paintings and paints about African subjects) offensive?

not familiar with Ofili - that sounds nasty
I cannot really comment on him
The Picture shown from Kara Walker is . . .bothersome
but I cannot say I am familiar with her as well.
Spike has offended me several times

Spike Lee is black. and most (if not all) the people in that movie that wore blackface were also black. I have no problem with that.

again, blackface is simply not a good idea. if you want to talk about female circumcision, there are other ways to get people talking about it. When the device thats used as art to call attention to a certain subject is so stupidly used, it becomes the main focus of attention, and not the subject itself. others call it art, i call it attention whoring at best.

I think it is perfectly fine for people to be offended at this if they want to.

As long as everyone understands that 'being offended' carries zero weight legally.

At some point we have allowed ourselves to lose our way and become terrified of 'offending'... *anyone*.. which renders us powerless, and gives unscrupulous people undeserved power over us.

All because of the terrifying fear that 'someone might be offended'.

The thing people need to remember is: People can be offended if they want to, they have that right. But that does NOT remove everyone's right to BE offensive as well. People have a right to say or do offensive things, just as much as others have a right to scream about it.

Freedom means we take the bad with the good, we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Do you mean socially? You mean people DON'T have to censor themselves? I wish company HR departments and "FCC" had that same view.

    :)

"Offended" and being "sensitive" is one in the same. Cuz its about hurt "feelings". Which can get all kinds of litigations involved frivolous or not

Blackface is not necessarily viewed as racist in other parts of the world...

I found it disturbing to say the least, and yes... it didn't pass the smell test, in my gut I thought it was racist.... so yes, I was offended....

But I also try to look at it from the culture and perspective of the artist and where it came from..... it is offensive and racist from an American perspective, but may not be viewed that way somewhere else.....

An example is black face, it is very offensive to me, but when I have traveled I have learned it does not have the same stigma .... indeed, I have spoken to some African Europeans that did not see why it was a big deal.... it is all perspective...

primarily because they were not the 'butt of the joke'

Racism is a bit of a misnomer. It is not about a whole race all the time.

I have often joked that every western country hates its own black people but loves everyone elses. France and England were known as great places for American born black folx.. . . but those that were born and raised there. . . . not so much and vice versa.

That is interesting, and I have kind of noted a similar set of experiences as well.... the one exception being Jamaica.... they were openly hostile to African Americans..... I was 16, shocked the hell out of me.....
