This is a joke right? Anyone who is putting damn near any modern video games in this thread should be shamed. And Modern Warfare? Everyone I know has beaten the entire series on Veteran (which is a pain in the ass...but there's unlimited lives/continues).

Hardest game ever! You get hit once, you die. You die, you go back to beginning.

Half the games on NES I couldn't even come close to beating. Given there were no online help, walkthroughs, etc. I have no idea how far I played for each one. The games I still remember not coming close to beating were the first TMNT game and a Batman game.

Once the internet and the save feature came about, the concept of never coming close to beating a game seemed to have faded from memory.

watch the ANgry Video Game Nerd entries on Ghostbusters, Friday the 13th, and the Silver Surfer - all very funny and all make a compelling case for the ridiculous difficulty of the games (and not "fun" difficulty either, mostly just due to poor control design. )

I guess for me it'd be either Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Return of the Jedi, neither of which I could beat as a kid. The Death Star level was a big WTF!

The hardest game in modern times I've played would be Ninja Gaiden Black. I beat it but damn it was tough.

TMNT 1, Battletoads, and Ninja Gaiden.

All games I had a ton of fun playing, though.

Hard because of crappy controls or unfair design?

I tend to block those from my memory.

I don't want to make a whole new thread on this (maybe we should? I don't know), but I was wondering what arcade games any of you guys had actually 'beaten'?

And by that, I don't mean, 'just played all the way to the end with endless quarters'.. I mean, put one quarter in, and play as long as you want until you just got tired and walked away from it?

I know a lot of people could get Asteroids up to that point, at my best I could probably stand and play Asteroids for a couple of hours before fatigue would get me..

But that was a pretty common one.

The one I was best at though, and one I have never seen anyone mention, was the Q-Bert arcade game.

Once you figured out how to play it, you could literally just stand there and play it endlessly, or at least I could. Back in the good old days of the early 80's, arcades would even have contests where they would pick a game and whoever got the highest score on it that day would win some kind of prize.

I still have the giant stuffed dog thing I won (my kids claim it as their own now) playing Q-Bert.

Any games like that for any of you guys?

I think based on responses this should be a poll between TMNT 1 / Battletoads. Haha. Turtles vs Frogs, let's go.

I will say though as far as modern day games, Ninja Gaiden 1/2 gave me fits (the current generation versions).

I think Contra is a beatable game but aren't there like certain levels that are missing because you're not supposed to get shot/killed once to get to. That's what I believe makes it hard. Like the one for PS2 (Shattered Soldier) You needed to get an A+ or something to get to the level. You "beat" the game but not truly because you needed to not get hit once to reach a certain level. I could be wrong.

Question: I played Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on SNES... is there a difference?

I usually see people refer to it as Super Ghosts 'n Goblins, but I can't say I've ever actually seen that.

That aside, I beat that damned game once in my life and was super-excited, and then they just say, "Do it again!" That's about when I said **** that game.

Yeah, when they played the whole "OK, now do it all over again/It was all a dream LULZ!" card, I damn near chucked my SNES out the window.

That game was really rewarding though, once you got good at it, you'd be rocking faces off with your golden power armor and triple lazer lance. Good times.

I don't know if it was possible to 'beat' this game, but I remember being able to play Tron on 1 quarter for about an hour if I wanted to.
