Gotta love the Euros. I think we should bring Sergio and D-Mo over, then trade for the huge pudman Gallinari. Starting five...

    Dragon
    Sergio
    Galli
    Louieeeee
    D-Mo

    Play Euro ball hahaha

You can only have 5 guys out on the court at a time, so you want to concentrate as much talent as possible into one player. My only hesitation about giving away Lowry is that he has such a low contract, which gives us money to shore up other positions. If you have to pay Dragic $10m though and he also plays PG, that's not very efficient. I suppose the upside of that cheap contract is that Lowry can fetch an even better talent in a trade because other teams covet the contract. Then the choice would be something like Deron Williams or Dragic + High Quality Power Forward (or something).

What is the current max we could offer Williams? Cost is important in this decision. I'm probably taking Williams assuming he's cheaper than the combo. I'm not paying 10 million for Dragic, that's just a bit too steep. Maybe if the contract starts off smalls and escalates in the not-so-near future...

    1. One Deron is cheaper than Lowry and Dragic combined will be.
    2. Deron would make other superstars interested in Houston.

Wow I thought it would be in favor of the Rocket duo but the lopsidedness of this poll is surprising. I voted for Deron for the same reasons as Juan alluded to.

One thing I have discovered about polls. Sometimes they start off very lopsided and then over a day or two, the results totally turn around. Don't know if that will happen here, given how hot Dragic is. But wouldn't surprise me still.

Lowry and Dragic combo is better than DWill, however, DWill will give us a chance to land another superstar, where Lowry and Dragic can't.

Is Deron really worth more than $ 10 million more per season than Kyle, even?

Deron is about 2 years older and 3 inches taller. Yes, he always put up great numbers, greater ones than Kyle, but Kyle just started coming into his own last year and this year. Many great point guards needed several years under their belts to realize their full potential.

This year, with comparable minutes, Kyle is better than Deron in the following aspects:

    - wins
    - FG %
    - 3-point %
    - FT %
    - rebounding
    - steals

Deron has about 1.5 more assists per game, but also 0.6 less steals and 0.8 more turnovers, so that cancels each other out. He also scores about 6 more points a game, but really, who cares about that.

I don't see how Deron is worth $ 10 M more than Kyle.

In fact, I don't see how he is worth a lot more at all.

And Goran might be even better than Kyle. If we can get two players who are almost equally good as Deron for the price of Deron...we should do it. Because they are not mutually exclusive, they can play together on the court, and do it well, as we have seen yesterday, somewhat like Parker and Ginobili.

^ It really has nothing to do with stats...at all. You are also ignoring the boost in contract Lowry will get with his next contract.

Dwight Howard is practically destroying his organization to get traded to NJ to play with Deron. He is not doing that to play with Kyle Lowry.

If you could straight up swap Deron for Lowry/Dragic, you do it. Thats not really the case though. You would have to gamble by letting go of Lee/Dragic/Dally to have cap room, etc. to make a pitch. Thats not really feasable though. Sign and Trades are an option, but NJ would have to play ball.

I thought there was a difference between putting up similar stats on a winning & losing team?

I agree that the incoming penalties will change the way teams do business. With even stricter tax rules, teams should be trying to reduce player contracts. The competing force is the higher minimum salary, at 80% of the cap. Between the two I would expect the luxury tax penalty to "win" and be the stronger force in driving player contracts. We should see lower contracts, on average and excepting max deals, each year until 2015.

But right now, in this offseason, players are going to get paid because the penalties aren't real yet, and it's clear not all front offices are forward-looking. Bad ownership has to feel the hurt before they let their managers know to shed salary. Some may still not care.

Just because Morey was able to turn Ariza into Lee doesn't mean that the Ariza deal was not inherently bad. Lee is a great player, but maybe we could have acquired him in some other way.

I do recognize that Morey does not blindly suffer from the sunk cost fallacy. But how is that relevant to Dragic? If you mean that, should we overpay, we can move him later, then wouldn't it be simpler not to need to move him at all?

I agree that having two good players is not bad insurance against one star sitting all season due to an injury.

However, if the goal is to win a championship, health will be necessary anyway. If we're not healthy, we're not winning. If we are healthy, we should rather have the star. Lowry's not exactly an iron man either, so we're not giving up two stalwarts for one injury-prone player.

Again, I prefer Lowry + Dragic over Williams as players and members of the team. But I would choose Williams over a free agent Dragic and Lowry because of the cap -- and therefore team building -- ramifications.

We haven't talked about if Williams can attract Howard (given all of the rumors) because it's just speculation. The cap differences are real.

These $10 mil per Dragic contract estimates are way out of whack. That is what the Suns signed Steve Nash to (and what Dallas refused to match). Mark my words: Dragic will not get $10 mil per.
