It's not just that though, her more recent characters like the "Don't Make Me Sing" lady and the Broadway actress on Secret Word essentially do the same thing. It's literally "hey, look at me, I'm going to do something and I'm confident I'm going to do it right this time but everybody knows I'm going to do it wrong."
As much as everybody loves to rip on SNL, they still continue to produce solid cast-members that go on to have solid movie careers. First it was "there will never be anybody better than Akroyd/Belushi/Murray". Then it was "SNL died with Phil Hartman died... and good luck replacing Carvey and Mike Myers." Then it was "Adam Sandler and David Spade are okay... probably will be in a few movies/tv shows here and there. But Chris Rock sucks and doesn't deserve to be on TV." Then it was "Who the hell are these guys? Will Ferrell? Jimmy Fallon? Pass... SNL hasn't been funny since the 70's." Then it was "Tina Fey's glasses are overrated." Now it's "Kristin Wiig is the most overrated." Frankly, I'm not sure why anybody has ever taken SNL seriously... it is what is is, late night humourus commentary on current affairs at a time of day/week where nothing else viable can be on network TV. Its really not in danger of going anywhere. Also, Wiig is not even their most talented cast-member. Fred Armisen is underused/underrated and could easily carry most of these shows with his characters. Samberg seems to be hit/miss, but he did help introduce the digital shorts (which have now likely jumped the shark). And Bill Hader is the one guy who is almost in every sketch, but you don't really notice it since he's pulling off each character so well... in fact, he's the one guy who always seems like he's having fun with what he's doing, and isn't pushing some hidden agenda/dream of being a big movie star.
Great post. Agree completely. I think SNL is just one of those things that people are going to complain about regardless of how good or bad it really is. I think some of it has to do with the fact that every SNL watcher has "their cast." There are always going to be those that think the original cast is best. There are those crusaders that swear the much-maligned Doumanian years casts were the best. The star-studded early-to-mid-90s casts have their fans, as do the Ferrell-Fallon casts and the current cast.
I already knew I was stupid and should probably be castrated, but count me amongst those who found Bridesmaids to be way overrated. Not a horrible movie, but not nearly as good as what the consensus seemed to be making it out to be.
I just woke in the middle of the night, couldn't sleep and so watched "Bridesmaids." I thought it and she, Wiig, were hilarious. I don't watch SNL anymore so I had never heard of her.

It's been a while since I saw the film, but I think she was in some early scenes with Alan Tudyk, and they were Heigl's bosses at her work, complaining about her weight.
She's funny, and Bridesmaids was hilarious. Sometimes it's okay to like things that other people like.
Maria Bamford And the rest of the answers are typical hipster stuff like Aubrey Plaza and Chelsea Peretti.

My fondness for the show was developed in my younger years when I didnt take things seriously. Yeah SNL has mature crowd material, but to me it wasnt about pondering all its relevance to culture. On that though, original cast members and their big box office movie successes made it both a tv institution AND a tough act to follow for everyone else. Eddie Murphy was or is the highest grossing actor of ALL TIME. Then there's the guys that did the treasured Vacation and Ghostbusters movies. Of course fans of that era can claim there's been "regression" after that. We can criticize Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell, though really that they've even come to close to that in their movie careers can be considered SNL doing a decent job brining in the right talent.
While I think she is funny, I detest some of her characters. Any time I see that "Gilly" character, I set my tv on fire.
