It's absolutely ridiculous that Johnson and Lee are taking the AB at 1B & 3B while Wallace wastes his time at Round Rock. I understand that Lee's auditioning for his ticket out of town, so there is some leeway there, but you know exactly what Johnson is - a below average player. Wallace certainly hasn't proven that he can play at the big-league level, but he also hasn't proven that he can't. That's the kind of thing this team needs to be figuring out while in the process of losing 100 games.
Cant the same be said of Johnson as well? He's had his share of highs and lows. And he hit .355 with a 1.085 OPS in Spring Training. I would say he deserves a second chance.
Wallace needs more seasoning at 3B in the minors. Its a physically demanding position that he has yet to prove he can play competently on the highest level. Hitting is only one part of the game... defense is an underrated and neccessary component (downright vital to elite teams). Last night's game likely turns out to be a win with better defense.
They've both gotten plenty of ABs at the big league level, and CJ has been better. Let Wallace be at AAA getting reacquainted with 3B and trying to regain the power stroke he had before getting here.
Carlos Lee drove in 2 of the Astros three runs last night, and hit .500 for the game. I know people don't like his huge contract, but the guy is valuable to the team because of his offense.
My point is that this team needs to be better defensively... and so does their third baseman, whoever it is. Wallace is NOT where CJ is defensively at this point... and the tradeoff in their bats is insignificant if one can't hold down the position defensively.
I got home last night, and it was 3-3, I was thinking hell yeah! Then a minute later Castro sailed one past the second baseman. I just dont think Castro is gonna turn out to be what he was expected to be. I just have this feeling, the last time I had this feeling was with Chris Burke. I hope I'm wrong though.
Major positive from the loss was Lee's nice start in the first game. Didn't he start terribly last season?
Johnson had one good season that is unlike any other he's ever experienced at the major or minor league level. His career minor league line is .276/.318/.432, while Wallace's is .308/.381/.487. Spring training numbers are utterly irrelevant. I'm not saying it's a certainty that Wallace will become an All-Star, far from it. What I am saying it that it is extremely unlikely that Johnson will ever be anything more than a sub-par player, so it's in the Astros' best interest to give those big-league AB to Wallace to figure out if he can play at this level or not.
nice start. tough to root against moyer. great story. hope we win but he doesn't get roughed up too bad, if possible.
Just tuned in..... Looks like its the Rockies turn to make a bundle of errors (3 after 5 innings). 2 homers for the home team so far.... I likey
