Yeah, they kinda had Walter in a corner here. As much as I respect him as a good receiver and great team player, he was being over-paid and i guess he knew it. Kudos to him; it's not like he'll be hurting and I look forward to him making a solid contribution (and no bonehead mistakes) for the team next season as a number 3 receiver and possibly/probably a number 2 receiver based on injuries/signings etc.
Two things: 1) Barring something remarkable, Kevin Walter will be the starting WR opposite Andre Johnson next year. People need to understand that this team already has a #2 WR - his name is Owen Daniels. Their third WR is named Arian Foster. Kubiak's system is built around WR1, TE1, RB1. It is not vital to upgrade Walter, who catches everything thrown his way and blocks like a demon. Factor in Casey and Graham, and, if healthy, this team has plenty of weapons. 2) Please note: all of their cuts/trades/defections so far have been to positions of depth. WR is not a position of depth - cut Jacoby and you have 2 WRs left on the roster and no PR. Once the draft and free agency ends, Jones is likely a goner. But it makes no sense to cut him now. Be patient.
Exactly. I don't see this as some desperate more to free up cap space because they are in terrible trouble. Sure, they are up against it but this just seems like a business move. Yes the extra savings don't hurt but Walter isn't worth his 3.5 price and he's still doing better than he would signing a new contract somewhere. Win win
I wouldn't mind if he was cut. He can catch the ball but he does not look for it! He runs his routs without looking back or even trying to catch the ball sometimes. Ive seen idk how many times he has not even jumped and just let the ball go by or over his head. Jacoby needs to go to!!
