We have our punter. Jones played for the Rams the last few seasons. McClain says it's a one-year deal, but others say it's a two-year deal.
Crazy. I just signed him last year to my Texans squad in Madden. Boomed all kickoffs for touchbacks and avg of 48 on punts. Moe
Donnie Jones? It doesnt look like the Texans tried very hard to upgrade the Hartmann/Turk combo at punter.
Well that makes up for the loss of Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, Eric Winston, Mike Brisel, Joel Dressen, and Jason Allen
Not really. Hartmann: 44.3 yds avg 37.8 net 7 touchbacks D. Jones: 44.2 yds avg 37.0 net 14 touchbacks Hartmann was 21st in the NFL in punting average and Jones was 22nd. Of course Jones had twice as many punts as Hartmann but Brett was a rookie last year. Jones will be 32 when the season starts. Punters dont cost that much, they should have looked to upgrade the position completely, not just find a 4 game fill-in for Hartmann.
Not really, he's pretty mediocre but I wasn't sure if your complaint was actually serious about a move to sign a punter.
Bigger issue is the touchbacks. Glad to have someone we can depend on to consistently knock it out of the back.
I heard this on the radio on thought they were referring to Dhani Jones. Then they started talking about punters ...
I get it. I know signing a punter isn't breaking news, but I would think after of years of having a crappy punter like Turk, they would make an effort to go get a good punter. An undrafted free agent would be an upgrade over Hartmann and Turk, so why go out and sign a medicore punter like Jones this early in the offseason?
He's suspended for the first four games and coming off a torn ACL, so if anything, it wouldn't be until the middle of the season.
I somehow missed the suspension. He was on PEDs? No wonder he booted kickoffs out of the back of the endzone.
Because the top punters are not available and the rest of them are all pretty much the same. For reference, the Texans are #21 in terms of net yardage. Denver is #6. Yet the difference is only 1.7 yards per kick. The Texans averaged 4.4 punts under Schaub. So that's 7-8 yards difference per game in terms of opposing starting field position per game. And this is between the #6 vs. #21. OTOH, the #6 ranked offense has an extra 71ypg edge on the #21 ranked offense. There are certainly some pretty damn awesome punters in this league who can seriously affect starting field position. But those are few and not exactly available on the FA market. Most punters are basically replacable parts.
