I've heard depression defined as "the lack of excitement". If you have no excitement in your life, nothing to be excited about or look forward to, then you have depression. I know it isn't that simple, but in general, that is what depression is. Lack of excitement. I had it when I worked a 9-5 corporate job, had a gf of 3 years from my hometown, lived in Houston in the rainly/swampy/polluted weather. I made a change when I left my job, started traveling the world and man I would get so excited on my travel trips of what I would see, and what was lurking around the corner - it gave me something to be excited about and something to look forward to. My depression ended at that time.
Depression is real, but not a disease. But I also agree that it has been taken advantaged of. It's a cop out answer for some. Many feel they need to be labeled something or need medication so that slap "depression" on them. But there are real cases of it and it's unfortunate that it gets thrown around like this.
A chemical imbalance is the blame, yes. Swoly isn't completely wrong though, as wrong as he is about the diagnosis side of it. The medication side of it has always made me very wary, which is why I chose to go to cognitive therapy rather than a shrink for my clinical / manic depression. I don't trust a corporation to handle the well-being of sick individuals when they have so much money they don't need to answer for their sins. I believe through self improvement or dedication the brain does hold the capability to reprogram itself in a way to subvert the chemical imbalances.
NOPE, and then YES. And then... WTF. WHOA. Endangering themselves or others? At that point, then yes, sir, help their "depressed" *ss out. Psycho and sadist isn't "depressed." You're going to get ignored or banned for saying these things, OMGz, mister Hakeem Status. Come at me, bros. EDIT: Loving the tags...! haha. Nice.
Um...that's not depression. Depression is a chemical imbalance that gets triggered no matter WHAT is going on in your life. You could be getting a BJ from Sofia Vergara while skydiving, and snorting cocaine.....if you are depressed, you will still feel deflated, and like nothing is happening in your life. And SwoLy.....I've kept you off my ignore list this long, don't make me add you now. Don't be dense.
Swoly, you're playing with fire. Depression is a very sensitive subject. Mock all you like but if you're ever sucked into that black hole you will likely look back on your contribution to this thread with regret. It can happen, even to you.
You can only fall into depression if you sit there and feel sorry for yourself. It's all in your mind, snap out of it and go jogging you SOB. I almost got depress last week, so I bought tickets to the Rockets game when we hosted the Lakers and guess what b****, no more depression
Why do people talk about a subject as if they know what it's all about, when clearly, they have no clue. Swoly.
