If you are looking to switch to a new energy plan, Reliant Energy has a plan right now for about 8 cents per kWh which is pretty low. It's only a 6 month plan and you will have to mention it to get it. They will act like they don't know what you are talking about. It's called 6 month basic or something like that. It's available to new customers and existing customers who are not currently locked into a price. I dropped from 12 cents to 8.2 (I think that's what it comes out to) which is pretty significant. It has a $150 buyout if you leave before the 6 months is up and it has a minimum kWH per month you have to hit or you get with a small fee. I think it was like 1500 kWH so most homeowners should be fine. Don't need a referral anything just wanted to help my fellow clutchfans out!
we're getting ripped off for electricity in houston. in colorado, i only play about 6-7 cents per kwh. only one utility company in this area.
It is a good price, but not completely out of whack with the market. http://powertochoose.org/_content/_compare/showoffers.aspx The reason rates on 6-month contracts is so low right now is that commodity prices in the winter are much lower. But when your 6 month contract runs out, you'll have a hard time finding that price again because it'll be for 6 hot months. Not that you'll lose tremendously by it or anything. Any fixed contract you get, they probably get approximately the same margin on.
a lot of it depends on what is used to generate power. Coal? Natural gas? Hydro? Wind? Some are lower cost than others, impacting what you pay.
Good for you. Gas prices have continued to actualize lower than expectations, and spark spreads have gotten fatter. So prices hold roughly steady, the generator, retailer, and consumer are all doing okay at the expense of the natural gas producer. And good that you dodged the min usage fee, too.
