Desk job M-F 8-4 then teach evenings 6-10

Hate it but renting sucks and we're saving up to buy a house.

I'm surprised by this question. Most professional careers (especially salaried professionals) require more than 40 hours a week, on average. This is especially true for those who want to really get ahead.

I could probably put in only 40 hours a week, and meet the expectations of the job and not get fired, but I wouldn't have been as rewarded the last few years through bonuses, salary increases and promotions.

I guess its a work/life choice, but I know very few salaried employees that don't put in well over 40 hours a week. I think it is because most salaried professionals are paid for delivering their expectations on the job, NOT for the number of hours they sit in the office.

Exactly. Any job you'd want will require more than 40 hours a week.

Depends on the time of year and the projects going on, but usually 55 hours during our busy times (tax season/September/October), and 40 the rest of the year.

I am a software engineer and I work 40 hours a week unless overtime is approved or we have a deadline to make. Most of the time though, its 40 hours a week. This building is a ghost town after 6:00PM. Everyone goes home.

Mostly 40. When on an incident, I can clock in 110+ per week.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

I'm at the office for 40 hours a week though.
