Are you guys serious? With all the holes we have you think we're taking a TE at 1? If the kid is projected to go in the first round then there is no way he's ours, we have other concerns.
What holes do we have? This is why people advocate taking BPA. You end up taking Kendall Wright because you think you need a receiver, and he turns into a Josh Reed from LSU or something. Or you reach for some other position of need, and you leave Fleener on the board, when honestly our tight end position right now is not exactly air tight in itself. Daniels is about to turn 30, and he's about square in the middle of average as you can get at this point in his career. He might even be teetering more towards below average now. Not a lot of teams in the league would trade their tight end for him. I will venture a guess that Fleener, wherever he gets drafted, will have more of an impact for his team than any player drafted within 12 spots of him either way.
podcast with Kiper and McShay, Texans discussed at 37:30 http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=7764623 they predict Kendall Wright or Fleener
I'd be excited about Wright, he's very fast with good hands. A 40 time is meaningless, he's got football speed.
He scares me more than any "projected" Texans pick and while I admittedly never saw him play, the combination of small and slow seems deadly and not in a good way, I quite frankly hope the Texans do not pick him. In fact outside of Blackmon and Floyd none of the WRs thrill me much in the first round, I'd almost rather go Fleener, OLINE or OLB in the first round.
Lance Zierlein loves Wright. I tweeted him that maybe he just had the best QB and he replied : LanceZierlein film shows your routes, your release your hands.... that is independent of QB play
He was a heck of a player in college but he does scare me a little to as a 1st rounder. I'm kind of along the same lines of you with going Fleener or OLB in the first. Pats have showed how devastating 2 top tier TEs can be and the texans run a ton of it.
does Lance do his own film study? he is so busy dropping names I don't know where he would find the time. I just assume he is regurgitating whatever his dad tells him...
Not a big fan of Wright. That is the same offense that made Donnie avery look like a star. I never trust anyone in an offense like that in college. The knock on Wright out of high school was that he was slow. I still don't think he has more than average speed. He is a good leaper and quick, but not fast and small. I'm still pulling for my man Fleener.
Newest mock by Kiper has us taking Wright in the first: Here's the rest of the first round for anyone interested. He has the Giants taking Fleener at the end of the first. Konz to the Ravens. Spoiler Here's the second: Spoiler
Brian Baldinger have the texans getting Coby Fleener at no.26 Kendall Wright (picked by the Bengals at 21) and Stephen Hill (picked by the browns at 22) got picked earlier. here it is the full round 1, if you want to look at it: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/mock-drafts/brian-baldinger/130100
FWIW [rQUOTEr]"Several sources" tell SI's Tony Pauline that the Texans are seriously considering drafting Stanford TE Coby Fleener with the 26th overall pick. Pauline also reports that "the other team showing a lot of interest" in Fleener is the 49ers, who draft 30th. Fleener would give Houston an upgrade on Joel Dreessen as a No. 2 tight end. He'd do the same over Delanie Walker in San Francisco, although Walker is a far superior blocker. Fleener doesn't block.[/rQUOTEr]
If true, then Gary Kubiak ain't drafting him. You have to be able to catch *and* block in this system.
yea, I did not know he was non-block skills, ...I thought highly of Fleener watching his highlights, but that is a neg. checkmark . . .I always thought of Wright as BPA at that spot anyway & would be happy to have him. Wright has tremendous body control (while route running) & great game speed.
