Thought this debate would be appropriate here and not on a RG3 thread. Also it's quite interesting that someone would start this debate on the day they honor Dream/Clutch City at the Rockets game. I'm simply moving this debate so people can argue Luck vs RG3. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=215828&page=6
So I know some of you were too young to remember or make assumptions but here's a taste of what did happened <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/epPwITy_BMU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Also. A member of this BBS had a pretty good take on this debate. I put his take in my signature. Originally Posted by Clutch Some say Hakeem was fortunate he never faced Michael Jordan in the Finals. I'd take Dream because of everything he brought to Houston and everything he still brings. Jordan would still be the better player though.
Jordan had problems early in his career beating Detroit and Boston. Dream made it to the Finals his 2nd year with Sampson. As Donny pointed out, Portland wouldn't be so stupid not to pick Dream over Bowie. So it would Drexler and Dream in their PRIMES on the same team. It would be Jordan and Ralph Sampson on the Rockets with McCray.
Please.... don't try to argue that Jordan wasn't the better player. That's just nonsense. I would agree with you on picking Olajuwon for the Rockets, but Jordan was undoubtedly a better overall player.
Tinman please make a thread and a poll about Thorpe, ask people if they know who he is like only you can do. Something along the lines of: 1) one of the best PF of a all time, iron man and without him no clutch city 2) just a good pf who could do some things really well 3) barkley was better 4) who is this thorpe you are speaking off?
I think the big issue here is what happens if MJ goes to Houston, with the rest of the pieces. The comment about Dream and Clyde dominating in Portland for a decade plus seems pretty spot on. Remember Portland made multiple finals appearances despite "blowing" that pick. Moreover, as much as he is likely the GOAT, with regards to championships, it's still not a one man show. His teammates have always been undervalued, imo, and it's only now that we can truly recognize the value of Phil Jackson. I think it's a wash. But on the whole, would I rather have MJ than anybody else?? Sure.
Are you familiar with these old teams? What happens with Jordan on the Rockets with Sampson and McCray? Would they beat the Lakers with Magic and Kareem? and would they beat the Blazers with Drexler, Porter, Kersey, and Olajuwon? You can say Jordan is better than Dream, that's fine. But what happens in that scenario, which would have happened if the Rockets drafted Jordan.
I have no clue. I don't like to speculate what if scenario's to things like this, so I wouldn't know at all. You can't really just measure things like that. I only know what happened in reality and that's what I'm going to go by.
The only thing I wish we did was trade Sampson to get Jordan and Drexler on the same team. That is the only thing I would have done differently.
For you people who wished we didn't draft Dream, here's what would have happened in Portland, kind of like Kool Moe Dee doing a jam with Teddy Riley <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Z3cF32xkg-w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zMrcBdXU9Nw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Didnt vote because of the options. Was MJ the better player? Yes Do I wish we would have passed on Hakeem? Lord NO! Its tough to say what wouldve happened if MJ was a Rocket, he wouldnt have had Phil or Pippin. But would have had Rudy and probably would have made at least one of his teammates as good as Pippin. It's hard to guess these things because nobody knows what would have happened, but im glad we took Dread!
what you don't get the truth? It's not that hard cause we know what the teams are at that time and what happened in history. History=stuff that really happened. Like Dream going to the Finals in his second year, and Jordan not. If Jordan went to the Rockets, he would have played with Ralph Sampson (look him up) and Rodney McCray, his coach would be Bill Fitch. Dream would have gone to Portland cause Portland wanted a big and Dream was #1 for bigs. It would be Dream and Drexler as well as Terry Porter and Jerome Kersey.
No way would I take Jordan over Dream. I think everyone got the best out of the situation that they could have. MJ comes here, Chicago nor Houston ever win a title, IMO. Portland gets 7-8 finals appearances. Clutch City is the greatest sports story of my lifetime, and I wouldn't trade it for an opportunity with Michael Jordan, ever.
Drexler and Dream won a championship when Drexler got traded out of Portland cause he was in a decline of his career where he couldn't carry a team anymore. Maybe they devalue him cause of TV commentary skills. Nike is in Portland, Dream would have gotten a contract and people would be beating each other up at Sharpstown mall buying his Nike Air Dreams.
well I didn't start this debate, I just moved away from the Luck/RG3 debate. I know in reality that Akeem Olajuwon made it to the Finals in 86. No Basketball fan in 86 would ever think that the Rockets made a bad decision after they left the defending champion Lakers lying on the floor of the Forum as the Rockets went on to the NBA finals!
Screw all those options. I'd trade Ralph to Portland for Drexler and the pick in the trade they proposed to us, draft Jordan and Hakeem, then wreck the league for the next 15 years.
This argument is completely irrelevant. The bias on both sides of the coin and inability to know "what-ifs" results in nothing. Do you think any Bulls fan would think twice about an Olajuwon vs. Jordan debate. Clearly Chicago got the better end of the draft in hindsight (title-wise), but Houston still ended up with a sweet deal.
