Related: Does anyone know where to get really good East Texas style barbecue links in Houston? The kind with the thick skin that you cut open and just eat the inside? I like it better than Central Texas German-style sausage, and most people I ask don't know what I'm talking about.

Man the only place in town that I remember that served this was Alameda Green's BBQ, on Alameda near the Astrodome, but that place is long gone. I would be interested in finding another place in town that served links like this.

BTW, I checked out Virgie's last week. It's on Gessner just west of Hempstead Rd.

I got what I always get whenever I check out a BBQ place I hadn't been to before...brisket plate with two sides. Brisket was damn good...nice smoke rings, great flavor, and cut it with a fork tender. Coleslaw was Sysco-tasting, but the green beans were good...tasted homemade and had bits of ham in it. Verdict is two thumbs up. I will be back there again.

I love those as well. My dad has a patient who brings him a haul of them at every appointment. He brings him more than he can eat so he usually ends up shipping them to me in Colorado. I'll try to see where this guy gets em

    Blizzidy-ump!

Seriously...need y'all's help. Bro will be in this weekend from the East Coast and wants BBQ. Drawing a blank on where to take him in the Houston area. Want to stay kind of within the loop or at least within the Beltway. Leaning towards Gatlin's. Any suggestions?

I can only second your idea of Gatlins. He'll be very happy you did.

Cool. One weird thing I noticed is that it looks like all of the good BBQ places in-town close at 7PM on Saturdays. Looks like we'll be having an early dinner.....

Tried Gatlin's a few weeks ago for the first time.

    Great brisket
    Great sausage
    Average ribs

    It was legit

GAAAH! Gatlin's has been ruled out because there is no place to sit apparently. Is that true (I've never been to Gatlins)? Our parents are going to be with us, and they need a place to sit.

There's a few small tables inside, almost always occupied during busy times. There's a patio outside with 4 patio tables.

Anything good in San Marcos? I don't want to drive more than 20 minutes.

Yeah, won't work for the 'rents. They don't move around too well. If worse comes to worse we'll go to Pappas on the SW Frwy I guess.... :(

It's been a few years since I've been, but I always liked Pizzitola's. It's in the loop and open until 8 on Saturdays.

    +100000!

I eat there once a week and they now know me by name. I believe they're the only place in Houston allowed to have an open pit now. Their deboned chicken is the bomb as is there Brisket. I dig the ribs, just not a fan of dry rub so I pour the sauce all over them. Yes, they close at 8, and they don't serve damn french fries. Makes me angry.

Love this place though. So good!
