All-time points per game is dumb. I mean, Elgin Baylor is number 4 on that list. Do you really think Elgin Baylor is the fourth best scorer of all time? He isn't even top 10 players of all time.
My quoting Berri's not a tacit endorsement of his metric. There's plenty of criticism for Wins Produced as well -- overvaluing rebounds, etc. -- but I'm just using his analysis to explain why PER is not a good measurement of players. This is about PER, not WP. The preference for high usage in PER is a huge problem if you realize that it rewards players who chuck shots, so long as they are making FGs better than 33%. That's a ridiculously low rate, and that player would be considered awful by any reasonable person, yet he could have a high PER. It's just not a good measurement of efficacy. PER reflecting players "about where we would expect them to be" is exactly what is wrong with it. It's confirming expectations by using shallow stats to support what you think you already know. It's not actually providing a significant metric for analysis.
Depends on what you mean by "significant metric for analysis". In-depth player analysis requires something well beyond PER, I agree. As a way to summarize a player's boxscore contributions (shallow as they may be), it does a good enough job. This is, again, technically correct, but also a red herring. Find me a player in NBA history who shot in the 30 percent range which PER rated as a good player. Such a player would have to have an unbelievably high usage, and in reality that never happens because such players aren't talented enough to create that many shots.
So, here is something I was thinking about while reading the rankings and "experts" saying that Morris should be getting PT. What do you guys think about this theory? Morris is not getting PT because Morey doesn't want to devalue his "assets". The reality is that Morris this season would probably not affect our record significantly if he were to be taking say C-Bud's minutes. If he did take C-Bud's minutes, he would definitely devalue C-Bud. So, if the record is the same why devalue C-Bud when you can effectively stash Morris for the season in the D-league? We lose some player development for Morris but should be able to get more for C-Bud this off season and let Morris get his next year. The other option is Morris just isn't good enough to get those minutes which I hope is not the case.
Most rookies for the Rockets during Morey's tenure haven't seen significant playing time during the first 47 games of a season. With no summer league or training camp, Parsons ability to get in the starting lineup is more of an accomplishment and exception, rather than a sign that Morris is a flop.
This. Some players pick it up pretty quickly (Parsons). For many, it takes a long time to figure out the Nba game. The rest will never get it (Thabust). Hopefully, Morris will fall in the second category. Way too early to call him a bust just because he ain't playing.
This guy, man. This guy is the kind of player I love. Chuck Hayes, Chucky Brown, Mario Elie... Chandler Parsons, welcome to the Batman Jones Rockets HOF for Over-Achievers. Some people might consider it a somewhat dubious honor though: I have Rodrick Rhodes in there too. I can't help it. I loved that guy.
So is smepth's "insight". High usage isn't a good thing. When a play gets busted, when the shot clock goes down, someone has to put up a shot. These shots almost always come from high volume scorers who can create his own shot. These shots are generally low percentage. But they have to be taken. To criticize a player for taking a low percentage shot because there are no better alternatives is stupid.
I agree with everything you said, Batman, except that Chandler is an Over-Achiever. I don't think he is. No telling how much talent this guy's going to end up showing us. He keeps blowing me away. If Parsons adds a reliable free throw to his bag of tricks, look out! If you mean as a second round pick, then I agree completely, of course. (Rodrick Rhodes??)
The way he shut down Michael Jordan made me think Vernon Maxwell had come back from the dead. I loved to watch him play.
Tonight Parsons had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists on .500 shooting. Thats a big game. Especially for a rookie.
Love the way Parsons is playing. I'm surprised MarShon Brooks isn't higher. He's been great this season
Brooks was great against us, he's been horribly inconsistent this season. Look at his game log. The last five games he is shooting around 30%.
