We have a backup that's played in more games than Matt Flynn. Yates knows the system and did relatively well at it considering the situation he was thrown into. He now has the confidence to come in and take the reigns should something happen to Schaub...and the coaching staff has the confidence in him to not have to change the playbook.
How does everybody feel about the idea of flipping Yates for a 3rd and another late rounder? He was the 20th pick in the 5th round. QBs come at a premium, and Kubes is one of the top QB coaches in the NFL. Seems like every year we could be grooming up some kid to trade away to some desperate also ran for epic lootz.
Schaub is coming back from an injury which has really screwed up some careers. I'd rather hang onto our capable young backup with playoff experience than pick up a 3rd rounder. It would probably take a 2nd and a 3rd for me to say we should move him.
1) It doesn't have to be this offseason, they would never trade him without knowing Schaub was 100%. 2) That asking price is insane. A 3rd and a 4th would be about as good as I think you could get. But I'm assuming your price is contingent on Schaub's situation.
I don't see why. It is widely believed now that Yates would've gone in the 2nd round had NFL coaches and GMs known what they do now. The Bengals even said they would've taken him had Andy Dalton been off the board. Throw in the playoff experience and trial-by-fire, throw in the extra value he has to us because of Schaub's injury and contract status, and I'd say "Tell ya what, he's a good enough QB to be worth a 2nd round pick but he is worth more to us than that. Throw in a 3rd and you got a deal."
That means there was only 1 team that had him as worth a 2nd round pick. The Bengals. That is different than it being "widely believed Yates would've gone in the 2nd round...". Can you provide some kind of proof from GMs or coaches saying that? If that's true great, and if anything, it just speaks to what I mean. Kubiak is a kingmaker for QBs. If there really are GMs running around thinking he is 2nd round pick material based on what he did in 8 games last year, then we'd be foolish not to jump on that while the market is hot. Right, so, contingent on Schaub. No problem there. I hope Schaub proves 100% healthy this year and gets a big extension, that will open the door to moving TJ for a good return. Let some team without a QB stew in mediocrity all year, and then dangle TJ out there on the trade block... see if you can get somebody so worked up they'll give you a Schaub-esqe 2006 deal. That would be excellent. However, right now, I don't think you're going to find anybody willing to offer you that.
Yates will be the guy. Texans don't have the luxury of spending to get anyone better, unless someone just falls into their lap on the cheap.

You can if one of them make crappy money. Matt Flynn and Aaron Rodgers for example were both good QBs. Back in the days when there wasn't much of a FA, San Franciso had Joe Montana backed up by Steve Young backed up by Steve Bono. But for the Texans to actually pay, say, $5mil/yr on a backup is pointless though.
Not until we get closer to the end of his rookie deal. He's cheap, viable labor - they have to keep (and continue to develop) guys like him, Tate, Newton...
This would make me very happy. I think Keenum might be THE sleeper at QB for this draft. And just say no to VY. Not simply because of his "meh" performance on the field, but also all the drama off of it. I'd rather bring back Delhomme.
Agreed. Big difference - Schaub was all potential: a better college prospect (based on draft position) that had very limited NFL exposure. Yates has a pretty decent sample size (for a rookie) and it's pretty mediocre. And if Schaub is healthy next year, he's not going to be able to build on any of it. I would think the market for Yates would be very soft.
Last year we were debating whether or not Yates should start over Schaub, this year we are debating whether or not he is a worthy back up.
We should have someone else.. Yates hasnt proved himself, although he is not terrible under pressure, for all intents and purposes he is still a rookie. Granted with some playoff experience. Is there an inexpensive veteran available? I dont know that another rookie is the answer
