Okay. I know Yates is going to have another year under his belt and should get better with time. He knows the offense and will likely make that jump in his second year. Still, I'm a little concerned with Matt's propensity for getting injured and feel like we need more behind him. The Texans certainly don't want to RUN into another situation like last year. So, are you guys and gals satisfied with Yates or do you think the Texans should have more insurance back there?
Given their cap situation, it's not an area that should siphon resources. Yates is adequate enough. If Schaub gets hurt again, they're screwed - there aren't any top 10 QBs willing to play second-fiddle to him - the drop-off is inevitable. Primary focus should be on keeping him upright and healthy.
I hear where you're coming from, but considering we're a contender with a great defense ....I don't think we can afford to not do something about it. It's unacceptable under the circumstances for this team to be screwed again. This is our window. We don't need a top 10 QB, but there needs to be at minimum a salty vet that can come in and manage the game.
Schaub had started 46 consecutive games - basically three full seasons - before the freak injury on a bellyflop from Albert Haynesworth. I think "propensity for getting injured" is a little much. And yes, Ric is right - for a team that's cap strapped, Yates is just fine. I think he'll be more than that, personally. QBs generally show a lot of progression from year 1 to year 2, and Yates has a lot of tools and believers in the coaching staff. I'm comfortable with him.
i think your best insurance is to sign fatty haynesworth. this will prevent him from signing with any team the texans play. =) Schaub will be there. He can take a hit. Since 2007, he has suited up in more games than Brady.

I'm fine with Yates. I do commend the Steelers for trying to have 1 project QB and 1 or even 2 veteran QB's behind Roethlisberger that can step in and produce.
A lot of teams would be screwed if their starting QB gets lost for the season. I don't buy this injury-prone nonsense. He's not particularly mobile in the first place and it's not like there's anything degenerative/chronic going on. I'm more worred about the hamstring issues plaguing AJ and Foster. Those don't tend to go away.
We need to consider TJ Yates to be the next starting quarterback after Schaub. I think he's got the ability to be a great QB.
I'm with you on Andre's hammy. Those things DO have a tendency of becoming recurring issues after a point. Either way, seeing AJ out there at full speed/100% next year will be comforting....with a stud #2 next to him. On winning without Matt....We're not a lot of teams. The Texans don't just have a Super Bowl CALIBER defense. Our defense has a chance to be a historically DOMINANT one. Combine that with all our talent on the other side of the ball and there should be no excuses.(like RR said in his thread) We need a guy in the mix that we can count on... someone who's been around the block....a known entity there just in case.
in mcnair's speech where he swore off peyton manning, he made mention of looking into a 5th or 6th round qb. could very well be keenum who they want. would be cool as hell. i guess i disagree with the majority of posters: i think signing a good backup should be a priority. even if schaub isn't "injury prone", there's no reason to give up all hope of winning a super bowl in the event of another injury, which would be the case if tj yates is our qb. we aren't like the pats if brady got injured, packers if rodgers got injured, saints with brees, etc. we have a great D and running game. all hope does not need to be lost if schaub goes down. i know few agree with this, but i'd sign the hell out of vince young. i think the rabid longhorn faithful's trust in vince has waned to the point where they all understand that schaub is way better, and there wouldn't be any clamoring for him to play, if that's a preconceived worry. he's a guy who still has potential to carry a team to win games if need be though, in my opinion. and he'd come cheaply, and he wants to be here.
someone like Delhomme or Jeff Garcia? do you think they can handle the offense better than Yates? or what QB do you have in mind? you cant have 2 good proven QBs in a contender team.
We were a play (ish) away from being in the AFC championship game with TJ Yates. I don't think any of us would or should lose all hope if he has to step in again. And now he gets to build on his 2011 experience with a full offseason. Yates is a perfectly capable back-up who's young, cheap and has upside, exactly the kind of guy most teams would *love* to have on their roster. The team is one million times better off allocating whatever limited resources they have to other areas of much greater importance. They have legitimate holes; QB just isn't one of them.
As the primary backup, with a year of seasoning including a playoff win under his belt, with a full training camp under Kubiak's tutelage, Yates should be better than any realistic option for backup quarterback. You're f***ing insane. Vince Young is terrible. He has always been terrible. He is better suited to flipping burgers at McDonalds than playing in an NFL game. Yates is already twice the quarterback VY is.
I'm cool with Yates. He spent all training camp and the 1st 10 weeks of the season as the #3 QB last year. I think having him come in as the sure #2 will give him more reps in practice and more attention from Kubiak which can only help him, along with his trial by fire last year.
