I'll hold off on criticism till mid-season but I thought this team was trying to get better? So far they've just become weaker and the depth/"next man up" mentality that made it great is now out of the door.
I wonder what are cap is now with the Ryans gone? This team is preping for next years FA...Locking up are LB's are key...Or atleast that should be the approach we have
If Caplan and Pancakes are right, then this actually COSTS the Texans money in 2012....instead it's a move designed to save money for 2013....but if that's the case (and the sole reason) then why not let him play through 2012 and cut him after the season in 2013? This move is a huge indication that the Texans do not believe in Demeco going forward. I heard this all season from N.D. Kalu during post-game shows...that Demeco was playing such limited time and didn't look like his old self after the injury. This is a football move...not just a salary move...I think.
Yes, but only if you're playing a Madden franchise with the salary cap turned off. I love DeMeco as much as anyone here (I have his jersey and I don't even wear sports jerseys) but some of you guys are acting like it's still 2009. He is not a Pro Bowler anymore and hasn't been for a while. We did him right by trading him to a contender and did ourselves right by getting something for him instead of just cutting him. As recently as a year ago, everyone here was complaining about the Texans being too loyal to their players. Winston was the 5th best player on our O-line, Mario chased the money, Jason Allen is just an average nickelback and now DeMeco is gone because he wasn't suited for our defense as evidenced by him being on the sideline for 42% of the defensive snaps. There's also this minor issue called the "salary cap" that has to be dealt with. I'm not sure half the people here screaming about this trade even get that.
It's an everything move. Demeco didn't play enough snaps, nor did he play well enough during those snaps, to justify his pay check. Add in the injury, new system, and looming contract negotiations of other big buck players in 2013, and it was an obvious cut. Letting him play out this year and then cutting him wouldn't make any sense, that might push his cap hit back a year (to the worst possible time), and we'd end up getting nothing for our trouble (unlike this trade). We could've held onto him hoping his value would increase for a trade next year, but it was a risk that wasn't worth taking. Eyes on the prize bro, eyes on the prize.
I'm sad to see this guy go. He was the leader of tha D! He pet the youngsters in check. This will be the last Demeco pic I ever make.
the majority of fans thought the Texans hit rock bottom when they hired Wade Phillips. what a horrible season it was last year, huh. can't believe people are crying over someone who barely played over half the snaps and didn't fit the system. the fact that we moved up our 3rd pick and got a 4th was a steal. and this saves us cap room for next year.
I understand..but you can make a a pretty good argument that the depth provided by the former Pro Bowl MLB who played roughly 50% of the snaps last year at that position is greater value than a 4th round draft pick when you consider that you're trying to make a title run in 2012. You still save the money if you just cut him after the season...the swing is the draft pick...is the draft pick worth sacrificing the depth? I don't know...I think you can argue that one out pretty well. Depth is a real issue for this squad. The next man up is pretty much up already before the season even begins.
The most important thing this young team needed and has now lost with Demeco out is leadership. Who is the leader of the defense now?
At this point last year how many of you considered Brooks Reed,J.J. Watt,and Conner Barwin as great starters. This is what good teams do, manage finances and get more good players through the draft

I was impressed with Sharpton in relief of Demeco. Who we have behind that, I have no idea. I don't think we're as thin on defense as we are on offense... guys like Schaub, Arian, Andre... they're absolutely irreplaceable. On defense though, barring any injury to JoJo, I think we should be good to go... that front 7 is a "plug and play" as any I've ever seen. I'm just praying the triplets stay healthy. No hamstrings, no busted feet, no misaligned chakras, etc.

It's not that simple. The question is... What is greater: Depth with Demeco / or / better draft picks and more salary cap room in 2013?
You can't have a good player and solid backup for every position on the field. Plus we're still in the period of free agency where everyone is overpaying marginal talent (see Jason Allen contract) and we haven't even got to the draft yet. It's not like our 2012 roster is complete.
Exactly. We did take a 4 million dollar cap hit this year, but will be freed of his contract next year when 3 main players are due for a new contract. Addition by subtraction.
For those asking why we can't cut him next year and let him play this year, I think if we did that you'd take a cap hit next year for the signing bonus left. I think Demeco was always overrated as a football player personally. He was never a game changer, he just cleaned up on tackles. He was great in the lockeroom though and that will probably be sorely missed. I think the Texans made a good decision doing this although I would have preferred to get a 3rd round pick for him.
I think we got the equivalent of a mid to late 3rd rounder. Moving up 12 spots in the 3rd round + picking up the 6th pick in the 4th round. Me gusta.
