I hope they make a special edition DVD that shows just reloading, no gunfire, for these bozos to enjoy.
I enjoyed the finale...and the season for that matter. Sure there are times that you shake your head (Herschel shooting 30 rounds, the guy in the caravan just waiting to get eaten, etc...), but isn't it the same in most horror movies you watch? People always do stupid stuff that ends up killing them. Anyway, I will let everyone continue to complain, but I really am liking it and am looking forward to next season at the prison
Does anyone else see a long post in this thread that is whining about everything that's wrong with this show and just skips to the next post? Yeah...
In terms of contingency plans, why do you have a group led by cops with no handheld radio communications? One of the first things I would do is raid a police or fire station and make sure everyone had a radio dialed in to one tactical channel.
These are people who are sitting on a farm and for the most part are not under any immediate threat, but instead of discussing strategy and contingency plans or perhaps fortifying the house in case of a walker attack, everyone seems to be changing spark plugs or doing laundry all day every day. Then there's the brain dead stuff like making multiple runs into town for specific items instead of grabbing everything you can in one run, lowering someone into a well with a walker, or just plain not knowing where your adolescent son is at all times. For people who care about quality writing, this kind of idiocy is extremely irritating. I'm not sure how showing a couple of reloads would be wasting screen time. If anything, I think it would add tension to the scenario and enrich the scene.
If the characters are smart, the zombie threat is drastically reduced, so the characters must act like idiots in order to drive the narrative. That's the heart of the problem, and it's not going to get better. It's always why 99% of the characters in horror movies act like they have never seen a horror movie. It explains why they didn't think to store extra cans of gas in the vehicles or to have a prearranged location to meet at or why Dale strolled into an almost pitch black field without a flashlight.
If you complain about the lack or reloading then you have to complain about them not showing the characters shower or use the restroom or eat.
Yea, I really want to watch a season finale where they have everything strategically planned out, no chaos, no deaths, just a smooth sailing escape from the zombies. That sounds like really entertaining television. We want to see them on the farm, living happily ever after, blocked off and away from Zombies. Who the hell wants to see them leave the farm to get supplies that could lead them into unexpected danger? Just grab everything at once, that way, we don't have to deal with the shenanigans that happen when you leave the farm. They almost die every time, who seriously wants to see that? Not us.
They actually touched on this in the last episode. Hershel and Maggie had a dialogue where it was acknowledged they had deluded themselves into thinking the farm was completely safe. Please keep in mind they had no reason to believe a massive hoard would swarm them. Their experience had shown the river impassable for zombies due to the buildup and the fences strong enough to keep them out. They were far from the highway so the idea that a major band that is walking over the highway was going to come to them would never cross their mind. The stuff about the town is obviously true. It makes no sense to make supplies "runs." Just take the big SUV and load every single supply you can find.
Please don't misrepresent my argument. You can have smart characters that still get into entertaining and dangerous predicaments (Walter White on Breaking Bad, for example). It just requires competent writing, and therein lies the problem.
From what I could see, there wasn't a lot of discussing going on. There was a lot of infighting, a farmer who insisted for most of the time they were there that it was just a disease that could be cured, two "best friends" who were mostly at each other's throats, etc. Herschel would barely let them IN the house for most of it unless they were injured or needed a shower. I'll give you the multiple runs and the well walker. Those were dumb. Still, I think you also have to assume this is set in a world where no one has ever heard of zombies, there's been no zombie fiction, etc. So these are ordinary people thinking on the fly, and not people who have had exposure to a fictional genre that just woke up for real around them. It takes some time to start making decisions that seem intelligent based on their new world when it's an entirely unique threat. If they go along with the comic books even generally, that's something that develops over time, as the methods to avoid walkers, to remain safe, gather supplies, etc. increase greatly in complexity the more they have to live in this world and deal with it. In the end though, nitpicking or not, you're entertained or not. I'll never get people sitting through 15-20 episodes of a show and continuing to tune in and pretty much never liking an episode. But, to each his own.
I have enjoyed the show, warts and all. The reload issue is not so much about not showing them reload, but showing them fire off more rounds than possible without reloading.
That's the point though. It wasn't one long continuous camera shot. It cut away to other scenes then came back to him shooting, then cut away, then came back again, interspersed with scenes of the women trying to get away, Carol getting isolated, Glenn taking shots from the car, etc. At any one of the cutaways, you could assume he reloaded, or you can say since it didn't happen on screen, it didn't happen. I prefer to assume he reloaded. That's all. Seems like a weird thing to harp on for a televised fictional action/drama.
i wouldn't put them in the same league... I don't watch too many shows and I'll say the walking dead is good enough...but not as good as a lot of people believe it to be.
Guys everyone calm down about the relaoding. There's a simple solution for your complaining. Herschel just has the extended mags perk.
What kind of stuff that are too gruesome to be put in the show? I want to know! I don't read the comics.
