Saw this today, thought it was quite amazing, considering the technology being used. Seems like they are getting closer and closer to overcoming that 'uncanny valley' which has plagued attempts to recreate genuine human expressions in CGI so far. I didn't see it mentioned in any threads, apologies if someone has already posted this. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j-pF56-ZYkY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Yeah, don't think it was posted anywhere (if so, I missed it). Quantic Dream (devs from Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy, etc.) showed it at GDC a little while back IIRC. Short interview can be found here for a few more details: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gdc-2012-quantic-dream/727754 Some details I can remember: this work is pretty old (a year old IIRC), and their new engine has a lot more features (think the video has only 50% of it or something like that). All work was done solely for the tech demo, and isn't suppose to represent their next game or anything. A few more details I think, but I'm blanking on them (check out the interview I guess). Good stuff. I love the work they put out. Seems like more than just "good tech" too. Reminds me of a similar demo they did years ago, for Heavy Rain: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/v5t4SYw2tFQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Looks pretty bad in hindsight, although still has that "it" factor I think. IIRC, it was sort of presented like the Kara demo (not represented of Heavy Rain, character didn't exist in the game, etc.). I know some people aren't big fans of their games, but I like what they bring to the gaming industry. Really excited about their new project, especially after seeing this demo. Some huge improvements over the tech they used in Heavy Rain. Recording actors motions+dialogue together should help out a lot I bet (especially if they use American actors for American characters).
when i saw this trailer, i really looked forward to the future of what gaming and cgi can be. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mVWhWsgHzKM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
How many times must Chris Cunningham be ripped off? <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/d2tBhaVEWGM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm not quite sure if it's intended to be the same character, but the actress/voice used in the tech demo became Lauren Winter in the game.
A female android gets built by robotic arms in both videos, but otherwise I think it's a stretch to call it a ripoff.
Yeah, the actress was used in the game, but the character wasn't (wouldn't make as much sense either). I was mostly just emphasizing the point that you probably won't be able to take much away from the demo, as far as what their next game will be like. I'd expect the same for Kara. Especially since they spent a lot of work on casting for it. A bit of a step up from previous efforts: http://www.officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk/2012/03/08/who-is-kara/
