Bidding war between Dallas and Houston in the off season? THAT will be interesting. Deron probably wants to play in Dallas though.
Deron is probably angry that Howard decided to waive the opt-out clause. He is definitely headed for greener pastures next year. I wonder how we would be able to lure him to the Rockets. Do we have a superstar? nope. Do we have an electric fan base? nope. Do we have one of the most aggressive and passionate owners? nope. Do we have recent championship pedigree? nope.
I wonder why everyone is just glossing over this, and automatically assuming the Mavs? I'm not saying he will stay with NJ, but this isn't a Dwight/Magic situation, where short of winning a title and being on pace to win another there absolutely no chance of Dwight staying with Orlando to finish his career. Deron can still stay with NJ, but would still opt out. As an aside, I don't understand why the extension and opt-out and resign rules are so different. Clearly, even if wanting to stay with the team, there is no situation where the player wouldn't prefer to opt-out and resign. If Deron was able to extend at the same terms as he can if he resigns after his opt-out, he possibly could have done so already.... or could do so right now. He could also still decide to wait if he so desires. I guess the only leverage lost by the player would be the team would then have a much better idea whether or not the player wants to stay with that team, so the Nets could have said Deron we need you to extend now, or traded him before the deadline... but that's not really a lot of leverage lost, because if the player doesn't want to stay, then they likely would encourage a trade, and worst case can just leave whatever team they are traded to in the offseason when they are a free agent.

D-Will ain't the player he once was. Chris Paul was able to carry NO to the playoffs with as much help as D-Will has...and the East is more soft than the West, too. I just don't see the improvement they should have had. New Jersey's one redeeming quality is a little known rookie named Marshon Brooks.
The question is "Does Dallas have the cap space to off Williams a max level contract?" If Dallas renounces all of their non-guaranteed contracts this summer it looks like they will have ~$41.5 million on the books from their current contracts. They would also have a cap hold for minimum roster positions of ~5 million. Cap used ~$46.5 million. If they retain their first round pick in this years draft the number increases to ~$49 million. The team also would not have the money to resign Terry or Kidd for 2012-2013 so there would be a lot of scrubs on the team. Dallas's 2012-2013 roster would look like: Nowitski Marion Hayward Beaubois Jones 7 x minimum contracts Doesn't look all that scary to me. However I don't know how MLE's, veteran minimum contracts, etc. figure in. Of course given the intricacies of NBA cap space mathematics I would want to see an analysis by Bima.
Will the Rockets have enough cap space to sign Deron Williams? I know we'll have quite a bit available to us. How about the Mavericks and Magic? If we could sign Deron Williams (close enough to home for him?), we would be a good destination for Dwight Howard. We could package Lowry and others (Martin? Lee?) for Howard.

I agree w/ Wade. Dwight is an idiot. There is a purpose for having put that option in your contract when you were signed, why put it in if you're just gonna throw it away. When you're a star player, its to hold your organization accountable, making sure they're doing whats necessary to win. The team is not in it for your best interests, its ALWAYS looking for theirs. If they cant get anything from you, then all that loyalty talk will end quickly.
