I got in for the Ghostland Observatory show. It was packed and the door guys.....well, it is SXSW and they had their game faces on. Cedrick Benson was in attendance too.
Haha! Fortunately not. BTW, today was sick! I started off with Glen Hansard. The man is an amazing song writer and performer. He entertained, chatted and was as real as they come. Of Monsters and Men was next and they are uber talented. I really enjoyed their show. I had a break for lots of beer and some wicked sliders from the Back Stage trailer, then hit the venue for the lone goal of seeing The Black Angels again. It would just so happen that we happened to sit at the table with the coolest musician I've ever met, Stephanie Bailey, the drummer for The Black Angels. She was absolutely awesome to chat with and equally as awesome watching her work (one of) her musical crafts. I feel fortunate to have met and watched her perform. Then was another moment of random fate......Snoop Dogg. I didn't get into the venue, but from listening outside, he was in form. What a great day 63 of SXSW!!
my brother's band plays their official showcase tonight at the Continental Club. check 'em out- Akina Adderley and The Vintage Playboys- they have a rad horn section and a soul singer with pedigree.
Can't wait to get down there today. I have no plan other than taking MetroRail to and from. Hope to make it to Flamingo during the day. Outside of that, I'll just be wondering.
saw Lionel Richie and a surprise guest Kenny Rogers that was badass also checked out shiny toy guns and diane birch attempting to check out Skrillez if the hipster kids let me in
Hey! Sorry I just saw this, but yeah we couldn't give out any wristbands to non-RSVPers. Did you manage to make it in, though?
How were Shiny Toy Guns? I'm hoping to see them tomorrow night at Pure Volume. I caught Skrillex tonight at 1100 Warehouse. Friggin sick! Still not my fav dub-step DJ, but he puts on a show.
Shiny Toy Guns were awesome, they played new songs, a cover, and some old favorites I got in Skrillex at Mohawk. Was it hard to get in 1100 Warehouse? was it big enough? Skrillex was the hardest act to get in. http://www.austin360.com/music/sxsw...anticipation-of-skrillex-50-cent-2243224.html At 9 p.m., the line for an 11 p.m. set by wildly popular dubstep producer Skrillex at the Mohawk stretched down the block, with people who were already in crowded onto the outside patio and deck. "There are more people trying to get into that show than Bob Mould, Gary Clark Jr. or anything else," Mohawk co-owner James Moody. At the same time at the Stage on Sixth, it was already one out, one in as people lined up for an 11:45 p.m. Jack White show. And at Austin Music Hall, anticipation was high for 50 Cent, who was to perform his record "Get Rich or Die Trying" live for the first time and with a rumored appearance by Eminem
Skrillex has done Mohawk the past 2 years and each year the line is extended well down Red River block hours before his set. And each year he's done another show shortly after Mohawk and you can pretty much walk right in. 1100 Warehouse is huge and perfect for a DJ set.
I had a pretty efficient two days at sxsw this year. I saw these bands on purpose: Niki & the Dove - They were okay, though a bit old and lacking in energy. Blood Orange - Great show. The guy totally worked the crowd with his Prince-like guitar wailing. Mux Mool - I love his albums, but live he's just pushing pad and turning knobs on his sequencer. It was okay. Youth Lagoon - This kid makes me feel old. He sounded good, though his music is a little boring in a live setting. Peaking Lights - They were more engaging live than I expected, though still a bit on the repetitive side. I enjoyed it. Trust - Great performance. This was probably the best show I saw along with Blood Orange. I saw these by accident more or less: Kindness - meh Chairlift - they were actually pretty good and not as poppy as their charming Ipod commercial song. Choir of Young Believers - interesting. really well-crafted music by talented musicians Danny Brown - rap. ugh. The irony of a guy calling out "*****" in front of a dopey crowd of white hipsters... it was too much. Cities Aviv - rap. okay. Doldrums - These guys sounded maybe like an out of control Animal Collective. Entertaining. Reptar - Sounded good, but I'm not sure what I think of them... Punch Bros. - Excellent musicianship. I'm pretty sure I was the only darkie in that crowd. I had to accompany a friend who's a big Nickel Creek fan. Bands I missed: Tycho, Matthew Dear, Com Truise - I had to leave the Ghostly International Show because I was getting sleepy. In my defense, I didn't sleep the previous night. At least I've seen Com Truise before. Grimes - My only fail of the week. Something came up and I couldn't go. I was really looking forward to this one too. Alright, I'm sure there were others at southby this year, so feel free to share your semi-exhaustive lists -- preferably those of you who did not see Skrillex. (Sorry guys.)
Which show you catch Reptar at? I saw them at Gypsie and some place on 7th, next door to side bar. Anyone else catch Soldier Thread? They were amazing. Those were the only two bands I made sure to catch, so I saw them both twice. Aside from that Zeale was pretty cool, and we met an up and coming band called Lucius who were pretty cool.
Anyone party with the Flesh Light when they were there? I got sloppy seconds! Spoiler I'm waiting for my buddy to post the pics from the Reptar concert of the guitarist crowd surfing, and pictures of Soldier Thread's singer flicking off the camera... She is soooo fine. I'll share.
This makes me sad. I saw Gary Clark Jr at Waterloo and have seen him a few other times. Dude is amazing.
he played before the Cult right? The Cult wasn't very good at Waterloo. Lead singer's voice wasn't up to par.
Yeah. The Cult was in the hole from the beginning. They were 40 minutes late. Had they not come out with "Here Comes the Rain", the crowd would have left. Their new stuff isn't very good. I stayed for a few songs before leaving for Auditorium Shores.
