Everything everyone is saying does make sense. Keeping Myers is the key, but I still think we need a dynamic WR opposite of andre, if AJ gets hurt we are doomed in the passing game. We also do need to upgrade the Oline and OLB Depth..maybe make a trade and move up for Courtney Upshaw from Bama...
That's why they resigned Arian Foster. I know he doesn't literally fall into the category of "additions' - but he is a significant piece to this core and locking him up long-term was very obviously a priority and impacts their ability to do much more. I think they're taking a bigger view of their situation and proceeding with caution. I'm sure they would have fit Mario in for the right money, and I guarantee you they are prepared to the do the same with Myers. But they have to keep an eye on next year, when Schaub, Brown, Cushing and Barwin are all potential free agents. I would wager they rank those 4 and Foster ahead of Myers; Myers ahead of Mario on their priority list.

I think a lot of us expected management to bring back the core (perhaps an unrealistic expectation salary cap wise) and take a shot at the Super Bowl. This time -- without injuries every week! To others... it meant Manning. I feel a lot of us were expecting to see a series of contract restructurings. Andre came first, we anticipated more, but that was that... then, the obvious move was to cut Jacoby Jones, yet he's still here. Meanwhile, we have several offensive players visiting other cities or signing deals. "going all in" doesn't mean potentially losing 3/5ths of your oline -- I'll tell you that much... Right now it looks like we're prepping to sign our own 2013 FA's and becoming a more cap savvy team, rather than gearing up for a run -- like you saw with the Jets 2 years ago or the Eagles last year.
There's no incentive to restructure or cut anybody beyond the moves they had to make to get below the league-mandated cap figure. If they agree to a deal with Myers, or another free agent, they'll institute additional salary cap measures (like restructuring Ryans or cutting Jones). Until then... They went all in with Arian Foster - among their free agents, who would you rank ahead of him in terms of priority? So they secured the most important piece. My guess is that Myers asked for *a lot* of money and they're willing to gamble his price won't be met on the open market and that they'll remain in contention with him once he realizes this. If the price is met, then his new team will be wildly overpaying for the guy and that's a reality they can readily accept. You don't go "all-in" by wildly overpaying for players like Chris Myers. Schaub, Foster, Brown... those are the guys you focus on. Interior linemen are much easier to replace.
Eh... sometimes you do man. Sometimes you do. I know one thing, you definitely don't go all in by letting integral pieces of your line walk. Hopefully there's a contingency plan. But right now... its spend smart, think long term, stay the course. Not going all in. Like I said, I'm interested to see what they have out there opening day. Still plenty of time.

you say to overpay to keep myers, then say to spend smart and think longterm. Those 2 things don't go together well. If you overpay to keep Myers and Briesel, then you are looking at potentially losing Barwin and D. Brown next year because they won't be able to afford them. It's a numbers game at this point and, at this point, they just don't have the money to keep everyone. As for Myers/Briesel/Dreessen exploring other teams' offers, most of the time a player/agent will offer the courtesy of coming back to the team to see it they would match. Since they seemingly have a good relationship with the texans i'd imagine the texans are getting that courtesy.
No, I'm not judging or asking for anything from the Texans. Just analyzing the situation. Like I said, some of us expected the Texans to go all-in. That's clearly not the case. I'm not mad, I'm not happy. Reserving my opinion for opening day. But not resigning certain guys and worrying about next year -- that's not going all in. Simple as that.
But Ziggy - they have to work within the confines of the salary cap. There's only so much they can do. Resigning all of their guys requires them to cut ties with other guys in order to stay in compliance with the cap. And if they don't have capable replacements for the guys cut, it means not only resigning their free agents but also finding capable replacements for the guys they had to cut. And remember, this all started because they have no room under the cap. The other thing to remember: teams like the Bills, Bucs, Jags - they HAVE to spend money. This time next year, all teams have to be both below (on the high end) and above (on the low end) mandated salary cap #s. That's why signing Foster and keeping him out of this financial free-for-all was so vital. And it's why they need to be positioned to not face similar issues next year when guys like Schaub, Brown, Cushing and Barwin hit the open market. They went all-in last year. They deferred a lot of this salary cap shenanigans for a year to bring in Joseph and Manning. Now, they have to cash that check. But don’t give into the NFL and ESPN successfully turning the free agency period into a heavily-hyped sprint – we have a long way to go and a lot will happen. Teams aren’t built during a single week in March.
Adding to solid guys to one of the worst secondaries in the history of football isn't going "all-in". You even reading anything I write? C'mon now, Hey Now.
Money-wise, it was - they more or less sacrificed this offseason to fit those guys in last year. Eh. I’m admittedly being selective and lazy.
I don't want the Texans to go back to a worse record than the Cowboys. They suck but just don't let us suck worse. Death before dishonor.
